If that is the problem, I'm not sure but if you havn't driven or ran it very long after the failure chances are your cam may be fine. I had ran and driven mine for a while during my troubleshooting process which didn't help at all. It turned into an opportunity for me to do some upgrades. I would upgrade to the LS7 lifter trays.

I would pull the plugs and\or valve covers first and do some looking. Plugs will tell you alot about how your engine is doing.

I just finished putting mine back together tonight cept for the rockers, I will put them in tomorrow night and crank it up...... Hoping that was my only issue.

How loud is it? When I spun a bearing it was extremely loud I even recorded it cause it was so loud and it was like a hit and miss at idle and was constant when you rev it up

If the lifter failed, at the most you will need cam lifters and pushrods. I would invest in some lifter trays as well.

Got mine running tonight and happy to report all is good. I will go for a drive tomorrow and see how the new cam responds! If you have any questions, or if I can help any please let me know.

Thanks

This was my first time ever tearing an engine apart much less a LS. Trust me if I can do it you can.... It's just bolts... Now that I've done it I would not hesitate to do it again. The key is not to get rushed and take your time. My car was down for two weeks. Learned a great deal during the process.

Have you had a chance to pull the plugs yet?
Can you tell which side the noise is coming from? Mine was spot on the rear passenger and sure enough that is where the bad lifter was. (Cylinder 6)

Resources I used:

Who ever said something about low oil light made me laugh.yeah trust your engine to that lol. Bud just pull the cover yourself, we are here to help if you get stuck, and you will learn something. If your going to have a car as your hobby better learn something, parts cost a ton but labor cost will bleed your wallet dry

if its a hollow bell like sound its piston slap, its mostly heard during cold engine operation and is louder during acceleration.

if its light regular clicking and mostly heard during idle its a bad lifter or dirty hydraulic lifter.

if you hear it like light tap to heavy knocking or punding heard during idle speeds and low load higher speeds its rod knock

if you isolated it to the valve cover its most likely the lifter or timing chain. if you have an engine hoist I would say remove the engine and remove to oilpan and use a flat head scredriver to check if there is play on the rods, might as well try to fix it now before it gets worst incase it is a spun rod.

This is exactly how I felt about it and believe me I was a little concerned during the process but like I said with ALL the info and support over the web you'll have all the support you can ask for... All I know is tearing apart a 20k car that I bought 6 months ago was not fun. The key is if you get stuck or not sure about something, stop and ask, DO NOT RUSH... This is when bad things usually happen. (At least for me)

If you have to pull the crank pully I can tell you from my experience to purchase the LS7 bolt as it is an inch longer which will aid you in removing the pully. Also, it will make it a breeze to re-install when ready. Just be sure that you DO NOT run this bolt all the way in as it is only used to get the crank pully started as it is an longer then your stock bolt.

Below are pics of the oil pump pickup tube bolt that took me over 6 hours to get in while working upside down.... I only changed mine becasue I didn't like my oil pressure at operating temp. After I got that the rest was cake.

Like I said, being I just went through possibly exactly what may be your issue if there is anything or questions you may have feel free to ask. Hell, if you were closer I would come over and start tearing it down with ya..

Thanks

Well, looks like I had more issues than a bad lifter\cam.... Have a look at bearing #6.

Looks like a bottom rebuild now.... Oh well, good time for a clutch\flywheel upgrade..

SportGold - if you have time to post here, you have the 5 or 10 minutes to at the VERY least check the torque on the plugs and even drain the oil/cut the filter as mentioned before.

Just pull a cover and stop driving it, the internet hypothetical diagnosis means nothing if you arent acting on the advice.

Lemons12 is a very smart guy and knows his stuff, he types - you read and react, very simple.

Do you need a hand pulling a cover? This helped me dive into my first ever plug change: http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...g_and_wire.htm

Just get out there and do it! Or have a buddy look at it.

I'm gathering as much info as possible and possible issues before tearing into it. I'm taking it to a buddy's shop tomorrow and we are going to start inspecting it ASAP. Step one would be go over plugs, inspect, and insure propped installation. Step two is pull valve covers and turn crank over and inspect rockers.

It he guy that put it together is blaming everything on the fact that I have a .649 lift cam with .650 rated valve springs. He has already told people that it's my fault it's screwed up. I wasn't even blaming him, I was thinking more like I have lifters with 90,XXX + miles on them and threw in a big *** cam.

If it's a rod knock, you'll know it. Here's mine with a rod knock;

And this was the damage:

Like others have said, man up and do it yourself! Take your time and gather all the materials and you'll do fine. I've saved tons of money by just doing it myself.

Once my valvetrain was replaced mine was not so obvious but only heard under light load, it was confirmed I had a bottom end issue once I pulled the plug on cylinder #6 and my knock\clatter (card in bicycle spoke) sound was not heard... (Or at least not as pronounced) I think it would be something easy to rule out. GL

He ended up staying at his mothers house three hours away for the weekend.... I'm I'm no big hurry at all, seems when I am in a hurry is when I screw things up anyway.
