Port my 853's?

So I in the process of rebuilding my motor, top to bottom. new heads and cam.

I called my local engine builder and he stated he can port my 853's and redo them and it will be the same or better than a after market head. Is this worth it. He said $300 to redo the heads and $1000 to port them. He has a flow bench and the machine shop drag races and been in business since 1971.

What kind of power gains can you expect from a port job?

For that price you could pick up some professionally ported 243s....

I was looking at Advanced induction, price seems about the same, $1000 for the porting cleaning up then you need to add the new parts to recondition them.

Im curious how many have taken there heads and sent them out to be ported and what are the results.

Seems to me when they released their latest ls1 port prOgram it's the best around. It brings the pp ls1 heads right on the pp 243s ass

AI has one of the best porting/cnc programs their is. For $1300 you could basically have a set of tsp 2.5 5.3 cnc'ed heads

Yeah, if you review there website, some great numbers coming out of the heads matched with a cam. The only thing is I dont see 853's on there, arent they the same as 241's?

you can get a set of 243s or 799s off of ebay for 300 bucks and then do the porting. start with a better flowing platform already if you are going to spend that much.

My rule of thumb is, if a mechanic or machinist has never worked on an ls engine, they won't touch my parts. I don't care how long they have worked on engines. This guy is going to charge you 1300 for a hand ported set of heads, when for the same price you can have a set of cnc'd heads from a sponsor that will walk all over his hand port job.

Not only that but if he has never touched an ls head, there is a good chance he will fuck it up.
