If you've swapped multiple cams..come inside Discuss what cams you've had in your car and describe the difference between them. I has a stock LS6 cam in an fbody and it didn't feel much different than stock. Maybe pulled a little harder up top but nothing special. Currently running a 224r and it pulls great all through the powerband and sounds much better. Considering going a bit bigger cam or maybe a custom grind. Car is a m6 with full bolt ons and still running the stock 241 heads. |
I went from a TR224 to a Cam Motion 228/232 and could feel the power increase in the upper rpms. The TR like to flatline about 5500 and just pull even after, where the CM feels like it is still gaining power to 6-6300 and flatlines after that. I only pull to about 6500, and neither really fell off but you could tell the TR224 was done in the early sixes, the CM still has an even powerband at 6500, but I don't think it would like much more rpm. |
Went from stock heads and a 230/224 .57x/.56x 111+3 to hand ported 799 and a 230/238 .600/.615 113+2. Much more crisp and torquey down low. Mid range comes on harder. Top end feels like it's just leveling when I shift at 6600rpm. Other than some minor idle issues on the first cold start of the day, it also drives better around town. Once the tune has some more work to eliminate that it will drive as good as my stock 5.3 Silverado, which honestly blows my mind. |

I went the lazy route at first and got the TR224 on a 112LSA. I really liked it. Car averaged .5sec faster in the 1/4 on the cam alone. I also used it with a rear-mount turbo before switching to a Comp Cams 228/228 on a 116LSA. To be honest, the TR224 gave better power with the turbo than the 228 cam did. Right now I'm back to NA and running a Comp Cams 228/232 .600/.601 on a 111LSA. Makes good power, but it traded low end torque for more upper end HP. It really comes alive above 4500RPMs. I'm running this with 243 heads ported by VA Speed. Anyhow, that's my experience.... |
We have dyno data for all our camshafts on the same LS1 engine dyno engine. If memory serves me correctly the 228R makes approx. 4rwhp over the 224R & the torquer 3 made 5-6hp over the 228r. Hope that helps. :) |
Really puts thing into perspective when people toil and stew over cams of similar size like they are expecting a 20hp difference doesn't it? |

Head and intake design are very important when choosing a cam. What cam makes 420hp through 241's and an LS6 intake might only make 425 on a car with ported 243's and a single plane. While changing the cam to one designed to use that intake and head might bump it up to 440hp. |
Yea that's true...it's almost like when you get a cam you gain an X amount of hp, but when switching to a bigger stick you would almost think that you should be able to feel it but its only a fraction of X. I'm thinking about upgrading (224/230 comp) but its hard to justify the swap to only pick up a few degrees...I'm thinking like 232/238 or something like that, but it depends on what lobes too which makes for a very hard decision! I thinking I'm go to get myself that edelbrock 2 piece timing cover so I can do cam swaps at will! Let us know what you chose and your results...I'll def stay tuned to this one... |

I agree and didn't mean to sound like I didn't. But when people come on tech and act like the choice between the 2 is life or death and the difference between the car running like a bat out of hell or losing to a 2v...it's kinda ridiculous. |
