TSP 224R cam

Wanting to get some opinions on this cam thinking of placing a order today but just seeing if it's a decent drive able cam I have a 01 SS with Lt's and GMMG. If someone could really help me out would appreciate it.

I have one. Power is great. Drives like stock. Very easy cam to tune. It sounds like it's a bigger cam than what it really is.

I've raced plenty of cars with similar mods as mine, exept they were running big donkey dick cams and I beat them more often than they get me.

I'd say it's still one of the best cams you can get and still competes with all the big and custom grind cams that everyone seems to run now.

BlueBeastSS 02-08-2012 12:43 PM

What lsa did u get?? And what timing chain and oil pump did u go with??

cranny 02-08-2012 03:08 PM

114 lsa, LS2 chain and melling 11295 pump.

Pretty much in a nutshell. I have a TR224 however but it didn't take much to get the tune right.

NVR_SPDS 02-08-2012 07:07 PM

I had the 224R, and it made 350/352 to the tires.

That may not seem like much to some, but when you consider that the only other mods were a Lid, Ported TB, SLP Y pipe, and Loudmouth catback, through a stalled, UNLOCKED converter. Stock manifolds, and cats too.

My experience exactly.

112, LS2 chain, ported ls6 pump.

I love and would do it the same again. Now id like to find a FAST to replace the ls6.

Does it sound like stock ? cause a friend is looking at buying 1

cranny 02-11-2012 08:57 AM

No, definitely does not sound stock especially with long tubes. Has a nice noticeable lope but nothing extreme.

turyg ls1 02-11-2012 02:50 PM

Ok.. sound just like what he's looking for...thanks

So is it imperative to get a new oil pump and timing chain with a new cam on these engines, I've seen plenty of 1st gen small blocks with the stock oil pumps and timing chains do just fine with a decent sized cam.

I just installed a 228R, left the stock oil pump and timing chain, I am only at 75K though, car has been babied (until now, lol) I still have plenty of oil pressure even idling at 750, around 45psi, just as whith the stock cam. I searched all over the web and I could not find one case of a LS1 timing chain breaking, so I feel confident staying with the stock timing chain, If I had changed my pump though I would have done the chain too.

BigBirdLS1 04-03-2012 05:20 PM

I LOVE my 224R. It is all I wanted in a cam: daily driveable, makes power everywhere, is a noticeable lope, and its great outrunning the bigger donkey dong cars with my "lil baby" cam. I'm about to add some PRC 5.3 heads can't wait to see what power it puts down. OP good luck with your purchase and install you're gonna love it.

That guy had almost 500hp at the wheels and never said how many miles were on the car, running the stock chain. I'd have a double roller if I had that much whp!

If its fairly low mileage an oil pump is not absolutely needed.
Its foolish not to put in at least an LS2 timing chain while its apart, theyre only $40 & much thicker than the LS1 chain.

Broken timing chain

I think if you read through some of what happened to that guys engine you wouldnt think twice about upgrading the chain.

farmington 04-29-2012 08:43 PM

The new timing chain is more important if you're using a strong double valve spring. They're not needed with a 224r. A good beehive is enough, but the timing chain is cheap and while you're in there anyway.... I put a stock ls6 pump in mine when I did the cam and I now get 45psi hot idling and 60 psi max. Way better than my stock pump (50k mile motor).
