Head identification question Okay all you head gurus out there, I have a question for you guys. I picked up a set of LS ported / polished heads at a local swap meet for cheap, I mean cheap ! I was told they were #243's. So my question is: All the quick identifying casting numbers have been ground off.... EXCEPT for the 4 digit cast number inside where the valves are. That number is 1240. Can anyone tell what heads these are ? http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...at42/head1.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...at42/head2.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...at42/head3.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...at42/head4.jpg |
243/799 have D shaped exhaust ports with the flat of the D facing down. Should be a dead give-away. Post pics if you can. |
TTT pics posted. Can ANYONE help me identify these heads ?? |
That's the only numbers on the inside of the heads? |

Are they rectangle port heads or cathedral? The valves look pretty large, if they are rectangle port heads, they are either ls3 heads or l92/l76 |

Ok then they are either 243/799's or 317's. They were the only castings with "d" shaped exhaust ports to my knowledge. |
the only problem with that comment is, I don't need 317's..... Can anyone else shed some light on this ?? |
I may be wrong , but I dont think those #s on the inside are going to help much I think they are just casting date . I have couple sets of 317s there date is D286 they off a 06 and the others B024 off 04. The D ports could have been ported in, have you measured those intakes they look huge. |
Yeah those intakes look fucking huge, the exhaust valves look larger than stock but may not be. Someone took stock heads and put as big of valves as they could possibly cram in there, they should flow well at the very least. |
Those are 317's. |
That first character is a I, not a 1 , I240 Looking at them again its ,hard to tell from the pics, but the D port was probably not ported in , can you get better pics of the port job. |

Well looky what I just found... seem I didn't look close enough !! http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...2/DSC00172.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...2/DSC00171.jpg Seems these heads are 799's !! :D |
And to think I was going to chuck the heads and keep the new valves !!! |
Thanks to all of you guys for all your input ! |
the casting looks a little rough to be 243's so i would say 799's or 317's |

My 243 have that same code like the last picture |
I didn't see 799 printed on it. How are you coming to this conclusion? |

Sorry buddy but those last two digits are not 9s. They are almost un-readable, but what you can see is the final lower dot on the furthest right and lowest spot. This would only be correct if the 9 had a straight down line to the right, which this clearly doesn't not have because of all the dots in the center of the character. That is a serial number from the company that ported those heads giving them a reference of what purchase order number they are tied to. Nowhere is it guaranteed that the original manufacturers part number, or any part of it, will be contain within. |

Sorry just doesn't look like nines from my point of view. Anything is possible, but still that doesn't necessarily mean that was the original head casting number. |
