Default Used 918 springs

I bought my car with 918 springs on it. I know the previous owner and he told me they only have 4-5k miles on 'em. The car has the stock camshaft now, should I replace these springs if I put a somewhat small cam in it?

218/229 .560/.560 113

I wouldn't worry about them at all with that cam and only 5k miles on a stock cam.

You should be ok. Just make sure they are the blue stripe 918s. I learned that lesson the hard way.

If you want some titanium retainers for the 918s, I think I have set in the garage.

Hell, I have either 2 or 3 sets of 918s.

I already have titanium retainers. Thanks anyway.

The springs have a light blue stripe on them. That makes them 918s, right?

Are they a beehive style spring with a blue stripe? If so, that pretty much identifies them as a 918.

the blue stripe just means they're part of the "good" batch... the 918s had a really bad quality control issue back in 01 or 02 ... lots were snapping and causing damage to peops motors (dropping valves)... Comp has since fixed the issue and the 918 is again an awesome spring...

Yup. I'm one of the ones who got bit by the bad batch. Dropped a valve.

That's them. I didn't take the springs off and didn't look very hard but I only noticed the blue stripe on 1-2 of them. Granted, the springs just may have been turned with the stripe facing the intake.

You should be safe with the 918s. They are a hell of a good spring. I'm a bit nervous about .609" lift on a 918, but a lot of the threat to the spring is in the ramp design. Lingenfelter doesn't typically grind lobes that aren't for street use, so my guess is they are ok.

The issue was with springs manufactured in the summer of '02. 918s older than that and newer that that are fine. I guess if you can't confirm the age of the springs (like with a used car) then make sure they are blue stripes. Though I've never heard of an '01 918 being part of the 'bad batch'.

My set from Nov of '01 is still doing just fine after thousands of miles with my cam. Most of the 'bad batch' springs seem to have broke in the first 200-1000 miles of use.....

Yup, mine broke right around 300. #7 piston, clean break on the spring.

My Nov '01 918s have 22k miles on them and haven't had a problem. But I would get the blue stripe version just to be sure.

You're not alone. I know of a couple guys with well over 30K on '01 era 918s with cams our size. I probably won't swap mine out for new ones till 40K+.
