LQ4 replacement for my broken bottom end LS1!!!! Any tought or suggestions????
 

So i have a 2000 camaro ss and last month i totalled my bottom end with a broken piston damaging the block....cracking the.block!!!
So today i came across an LQ4 engine but im not sure if its a good thing to do!!!????
Any insights or suggestions would be nice before i buy the block tomorrow......also will i be able to use my old assecories and headers??? Thanks for ur help in advance :-)

Everything is a direct swap and you have to use your intake and accessories... What is the price? Lq4s usually run 1000 to 1400..

Im going to pay $600 fot the block wit heads on ...i guess my biggest concern is making less power then before!!

Did you have anything done to your old motor? Thaw lq4 has a fished piston which will lower your compression a little if your just swapping long block for long block. So you might lose a little, but probably not that noticable.

If you wanted to throw some money at it you could mill some of the heads, put flat top pistons in and do a cam swap before you drop it in and then you'll have more power than before :)

Mill your ls1 heads and swap them on otherwise it'll be down a bit on power.

I did the same with my car when my ls1 went. I have no complaints. Just use the LQ4 short block and take your ls heads and get them milled .10 and you will be very happy with it.

I talked to one of my friends he said to leave the lq4 heads on the block because they are bettrer flowing heads, so im confused should i mill the LQ4 and slap them on or should i mill my ls1 heads and slap those on???? Also right now im on.a budget limit so as soon as i buy the block ill have an extra $400 to spend wat should i do to make this a better and makre stronger block then the ls1

mill the 317 heads and use them.... put katech rod bolts in it... ls2 timing chain and an ls6 oil pump.. that way when your ready for a cam all you have to do is swap the cam and springs.

That is what I would do at least...

While you've got the heads off and gonna have to run through install height anyway I'd put Pac springs on it now. I wouldn't mill too much off the 317 till you decide for sure if you are wanting to go FI or not...

Decide on cam first before milling and then base your decisions on that.

your 317 heads have the same port and size of the 243 just a larger chamber than the 243. stick with those.

.030 milled 317s with thinner gaskets will still barely get you to stock LS1 compression.

they do flow a tad better than the LS1 head but if you are pulling heads and milling i'd prefer to raise compression and get the torque bump from using the LS1 head vs the slight flow increase.

I would put money that my old combo with 317s milled .030 performed better than a ported ls1 head.

Thanks guys for all ur help and advice , but i actually foubd a great price on a LS1 small b decided to go that route...i dont know but i think its abetter idea sticking to an aluminum block rather then iron....once again thanks for all the ideas and help..
