Has anyone seen their oil pressure gauge do this?

I did a search on bad oil pressure sending unit symptoms, but all I found were threads pertaining to too high or too low of a pressure reading. Today as I was driving home from picking up dinner, I noticed my oil pressure was, "bounching around" and very...jolty. It's never been like this before, but the pressure itself is well within "optimal" range. Should I be worried about a pump going out, or is it safe to say it's probably just a weak sender? The car has 133K miles, with I'm sure both a stock pump as well as a stock sending unit.

Sorry about the rough video quality, but if you view it in full screen you can see what I'm talking about pretty good.

I would be more inclined to think it's the sender, or the wiring from it.
Your pressure looks good to me, hows the pressure at hot idle?

Dustin Raab 09-05-2012 08:42 PM

I'm hoping so, wouldn't hurt to start there, as an ACDelco part from Rockauto is 30 bucks.

Hot idle and after a beating is still 40, maybe a shade under.

Definitely sender! I would buy a quality one (ac delco) the ones at parts stores will be out of business within the first year you get it. A few extra bucks is worth piece of mind in my opinion.

Not to mention the knockoff at my local parts store is 15 bucks more than the delco one!

Thanks for the input, I'm making a 180 mile drive tomorrow and I didn't want to have to worry about a pump going out.

Thanks again!

Yea thats def the sending unit.

As the others have said it's definetly the sending unit. Also - get the ACDelco Sending unit. I just had this same exact problem on my 6.0 LQ4 in my Silverado and replacing the Sending Unit did the job. :)

yea my needle goes batshit insane at idle, pretty sure its the sending unit

Sending unit, there would more then likely be no oil pressure if the pump was having an issue.
