If you had 500$ to spend on a stock ls1...

If you had 500$ to spend on a stock ls1 engine, what would you do to get the most hp? Cai? Td's?

02 reaper z28 10-23-2012 07:04 PM

bbk hears & y pipe- $370

P&P throttle body- $68

frost tune-$150

a lil bit over bugget but there good starting mod's

SVTconfused 10-23-2012 07:05 PM

tune
headers
tb

all in all it can be found on here cheap from time to time

ChadDub 10-23-2012 07:07 PM

How much hp do you think I can gain with 500$? And what size tb should I get?

SVTconfused 10-23-2012 07:09 PM

a tune alone is probally close to 30... but the hp gain isnt the big deal with a tune... its how it will move the power curve and keep it longer...

02 reaper z28 10-23-2012 07:14 PM

yep the tune is the most inportan part.

ChadDub 10-23-2012 07:17 PM

Seriously? I dynod a few years ago and I ran 315hp... Maybe I'll hit 370 with headers and a tune...

SVTconfused 10-23-2012 07:18 PM

what year car?

KCS 10-23-2012 07:21 PM

I'd look at nitrous. I bought a kit when my car was 100% bone stock and sprayed 150 shot.

ChadDub 10-23-2012 07:24 PM

It's a 98 camaro

this here is also a good route... might seem a lil bit more expensive at first... but once you count all the little things nitrous is the best bang for the buck... considering you can change jet sizes

ChadDub 10-23-2012 07:27 PM

I don't want nos, nos is for fags.

ChadDub 10-23-2012 07:36 PM

So I guess I'm ordering headers and a tb next week. How much do you think a shop would charge to install headers?

I'd spend the money on headers and a tune (and not a mail order tune). As for 370rwhp, I doubt it.

Sales4@Texas-Speed 10-23-2012 08:09 PM

LOL at nos is for fags.

I would start with headers and tune if its can fit in the budget. Long tube headers have always been a proven gainer on these cars.

Lol, it's from a movie. But I don't like nos because I don't want to have to spray just to go fast. I don't even go to the track, I just like peeling out at every light and killing mustangs. I just want 400hp the cheapest way possible n/a.

Jenson 10-23-2012 08:15 PM

Can't just do headers, need y pipe too, and exhuast after the y. You'll need to head to the used section here.

navyboys99ta 10-23-2012 08:19 PM

My 99 made 340 rwhp full bolt on's Pacesetter lt's off road y pipe SLP loud moulth cat back, a ported stock tb and a tune

zacht 10-23-2012 08:20 PM

ebay headers an ory......find a friend or diy port your throttle body...do all the free mods. and get a tune....

TransAmWS.6 10-23-2012 08:33 PM

Headers and an O/R Y, then a tune. You could do it for possibly less than, or right around $500 if you play your cards right and buy cheap stuff. Headers may not last long or hold up great, but you likely see the most gains from them if you can do a tune.

zacht 10-23-2012 08:52 PM

actually...i say take your time and buy the stuff used on here...

i got some used ebay headers and long tubes shipped to my door for 200 bucks...fit awesome too someone already modified the y to fit perfect...

damn near everything on my car is used off here...great condition at a fraction of the cost...

keep your eyes open on here a deal will come...

BKsNHRA 10-23-2012 10:17 PM

I got my new eBay stainless headers for under 200. I cut off the air tubes. Welded that crap up myself with some stainless wire. Bought a tsp y pipe. That's should put you under 500. The eBay headers dident fit perfect. They still rattle a bit sometimes but ill eventually get under their and clearance them or get tired of them next time their off for more mods and buy some tsp headers. Lol

You ask for suggestions so here's mine: Save another $100 bucks or so and buy a GMMG catback either new or used. Or get your hands on a Magnaflow catback over at WS6Store because he has them for just a few bucks over $500. Thats just my opinion. I'm more into having nice things rather than a lot of things and thats my suggestion to you. If 400 rwhp is your only goal then buy a nitrous kit. I know you said you don't like it but it's about as realistic as you can get for $500. Good luck with whatever you decide.

ChadDub 10-24-2012 07:32 AM

Do people here usually install headers themselves or do they get them installed? Because I could do it I just don't want my car out of commission for more than a weekend.

94Z28-MSTGKLR 10-24-2012 10:28 AM

^ It's definantly not the most difficult thing to do and if you have any generel mechanical knowledge I'm sure you can handle it. If you have a buddy that can help out too, you could do it in a saturday afternoon and that's assuming you've never done it before. When I installed my Kooks it took me about 5 hours from he time I started until I had the car running and I did it entirely by myself. Although I've probably installed a dozen of them. Getting all the factory stuff out is the hard part (for me anyway).

wildcamaro 10-24-2012 11:02 AM

Throttle body is worthless in my eyes on a stock motor....and most times people port them they are doing more harm than good...

If I were you I would try to score some used headers, ls6 intake, and a cai

wildcamaro 10-24-2012 11:03 AM

I take that back I would do a y pipe and cat back before the ls6 intake

Thank you! I never speak my mind on this bc everybody and their brother on here keep telling others to port their tb as an entry level mod. I understand its a budget mod, but also WORTHLESS for many applications...save your time and money for mods that actually advance your setup.

VandykeT/A 10-24-2012 01:33 PM

Headers aren't hard. Pull the coil packs, steering linkage, unbolt the old exhaust and bolt them back up. You can do it in a day no problem. Just make sure the car is really high in the air. You need to able to basically turn the header straight up and slide it in from the bottom. A buddy will come in handy to. It makes it alot easier if someones under the car to help hold the header up to get the bolts in. I'd also do motor mounts while you got the headers off.

Gunslinger09 10-24-2012 01:42 PM

The good news is with these cars being around a while you can pick up good used parts on the cheap. Provided the car doesn't need basic maintenance first you could probably find a lid, headers, exhaust all right in the $500 range. You said stock so I am assuming that you are going from zero modifications. Remember changing out the stock air box on a 4th Gen Fbody was worth an honest 25 Hp.

chevybayboy 10-24-2012 01:58 PM

If you do do motor mounts make sure you do one side at a time lining it back up would be very hard if both were out I took both mine out when I changed to poly mounts and 400 rwhp that's what there saying I'm pushing with all the mods in my Sig haven't got tuned yet waiting on a few more things so ill let you know after tune

wildcamaro 10-24-2012 04:38 PM

Literally when I first got my stock 98z28 it could do about 135mph then I put on a cold air intake, lid, and cat back (all SLP) and then it was able to go off the speedo (160+mph)! Def should be able to find all this cheap on the classifieds...

If you do get headers hedman sells brand new painted for $250, I didn't even have to remove the steering bc they fit good

ChadDub 10-24-2012 05:56 PM

I hit 160 with me and two friends in the car a few months back... Would I get more if I do ls6 intake + long tubes? I heard that you get 15 hp from ls1 to ls6 and then I'll probably get around 10-15 with headers...

And what are some "free mods"? You mean like porting the tb? Should I port the ls6 or would it not be worth it?

This. I save up for each mod a little more, so that I have nicer stuff. Could have cheaper out of 1-3/4 headers but I waiting a little more and got 1 7/8. When i pick up a cam, itll be custom, and as a package with all the right parts. no use loading your car up with shitty parts, just to want to redo it, when you get tired of doing burnouts at stop lights.

Also, a little off topic, but does anyone else notice that the f body crowd is getting younger and younger....

Jenson 10-25-2012 06:30 AM

You guys do realize that the stock fuel cutoff is 155 right? Your not going 160, stock speedo's are way off on these after 100.

Fbody crowd isnt getting any younger, we are getting older, as in the last wave of new blood.

ChadDub 10-25-2012 08:50 AM

It's because fbody's are cheap and fast.

edub80 10-25-2012 08:55 AM

if your an A4 then get a converter if all you want to do is ROAST your tires plus you would be faster than what you are now

n2o is the most bang for the buck. I wouldnt run nitrous but to answer you question .. isnt anything that makes more power for the money

But you wont have any money for mods if you keep replacing tires and getting careless/reckless driving tickets:)

N2O is the best bang for the buck. You will not get 400hp for $500 with bolt ons. $500 might cover a cam & pushrods, but you wont have anything else to properly install it. You might also want to edit your original post too

ChadDub 10-26-2012 10:47 PM

I'm starting to think about going for a 3600 and 3.73 gears first before I do anything. Would this be a good idea? What brand gears should I get?
