Angry $250 SLP 1.85 Rocker Arms... yeah right

Back in October 2003, I bought a set of supposedly brand new, SLP 1.85-rocker arms from a non-sponsor for $250. I compared the new rockers to stock 1.7 rocker arms and could not see ANY difference between them. Usually, a higher ratio rocker would have the pushrod seat set closer to the fulcrum or at least some geometry change that would be different. I asked the vendor if the rockers came direct from SLP. The story I got was that the vendor bought a few sets from one of the guys that manufactured the SLP units. SLP required that a 1000 pieces needed to be satisfactorily manufactured before they would accept them. Thus, the set I bought was from the initial 1000 piece run.

It took me awhile to install the new rockers and to test them out. I swapped to 918 springs at the same time. First track night, my mph was down by 1 mph, but that could have been from poor weather. I was able to adjust shift point a notch higher and then regained the lost mph. Net effect, no gains. Second track night, same as before, no net gains. I tried higher shift points but started to lose mph.

I’m really starting to feel that my $250 bought me a set of stock rocker arms. My question is “Anybody else buy these $250 rocker arms and have a similar experience?”

Pull a valve cover and mount a dial indicator on a valve tip. Turn the engine over by hand and measure the valve lift. That's the only way to be sure.

I can get my hands on a dial indicator. Good idea, that way I'll know for sure.

One of the things that **** me off is that the vendor advertises the rockers as SLP. That is not right!

I am curious to hear from anyone else who bought these $250 specials. And, although I am not certain right now, I wanted to post a caution to anyone thinking about buying a set. I will try to confirm the true ratio soon and post the results.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen!

Stew w/92&00,
hahaha, yes it rhymes! FWIW, they recently stopped offering the $250 special on their website. I would like to think that it was because of my message to them.

Anybody need a set of rockers that perform as well as stockers?? LOL

They SHOULD give you your $$ back. If they didn't, I would contact one of the Moderators here to see if they can help. That type of stuff REALLY pisses them off....

They are not site-sponsors so I wouldn't want to involve the site administrators. Plus, I need to be certain first that they are not 1.85 rockers. I just made arrangements to use a dial indicator. I will post my findings, good or bad, when I am done.

Thumbs down

OK, I just checked them with a dial gauge today. The first reading was .478", the second & third was .35x. I guess the lifter bled down after the first reading rotation. Is there about .125" range in stock lifter plunger travel? I need to be 100% certain that I did not get 1.85 ratio rockers. I guess it could be possible that the lifter during the first reading attempt had bled down to .478" (although I doubt it, too close to the stock lift)

I pulled off one of the supposed 1.85s. I want somebody else to compare or measure it. Anybody living on Oahu, Hawaii have a set of real uninstalled SLP 1.85s that would be willing to allow a visual comparison?

If there is anybody who compared stock rocker arms with SLP 1.85 can you please chime in and share your knowledge. I would be very, VERY grateful. Thank you.

I own an inspection laboratory in California. If you want to know the exact ratio, I can hook you up. I'll do it free, but you would have to pay shipping both ways for 1 arm (don't need them all). We do cam/valvetrain geometry measurements for several race teams.

But it would be easier if you find someone local.

You could take one of the "1.85" rockers and one stock rocker to a machine shop for a comparison. Most machine shops could measure this dimension for you.

The slp ones I had a while back (they came from SLP) were marked a little different then the stock ones, you can put them next to each other upside down and see where the cup for the pushrod was closer to the pivot.

FWIW I didnt pick up anything with them on my stock cammed bolt on C5. Dynod the car, swapped the rockers and springs right there and dynod again. Picked up nothing on average but a couple pulls did make a few hp/tq more.

Thank you for your replies gentlemen!

goober,
That's a good & helpful idea. Anybody got the fulcrum center point to pushrod center point value?

McRat,
Your kind offer is appreciated. However, I'm going to try & resolve it here. Very much appreciated though!!

Larry,
Awhile back I inquired with a machine shop near my working place to see if they could measure it for me. They couldn't. I guess I should have found a shop that could 've before I installed them.

kp,
Thank you for sharing your experience! Damn, even with genuine SLPs you got zilch?!?

All I wanted for now was that small across the board power gain that appears in that LS1 Performance book. I'm going to forget rocker arms and do a small cam instead. That's it, my mind is made up.................... at least for today, LOL

Thank you for all replies!
