5.7 aluminum or 6.0 Iron
Well im kinda tossin around some ideas.May have a problem on the bottom end of my 02 ls1. 241s are fresh with valve job and .015 off them. Lifters are new.cam had about 11,000 on it.Still runs fine just has a intermitent noise that i can seem to find. Lifters and heads are fresh as of about 1000,miles ago. I have cut open three oil filters and see nothing worth mentioning in it.
since im thinking shortblock, money is kinda tight but i do have another vehicle to drive. What should i do? Rebuld my 02 LS1 or purchase a 370 TMS motor. Tms even has good prices on a rebuild LS1 aluminum short block.
Basically the car is street driven. I like to hit the track about once a month on a TNT night and make a few passes. Car is a 6 speed with 3.73 gears and a monster stage 2 clutch that i havent even installed yet. Has a EPS 226-230 112+2 cam in it Factory LS6 intake. What ever i do i will have to reuse my 241 heads for now and possibly the cam unless i find some extra money for one a lil stouter. The LS7 lifters have less than 1k on them as do the heads. I basically want a fun street car that i can drive to the track blow down a few passes and drive home. I need a engine that i can DD if needed. Car currently runs in the 12s.
Looking for some opinions here. Let me know which way you would go and why. Please keep in mind i have to reuse the 241s right now and i dont want something that i would have to change electronics/computer or accessorys.

There is more power to be made with more cubes...Personally...I would opt for the LS1 tho. Either stroke it, or just do a good head/cam swap. The iron 6.0 would have to make about 40ish more hp to make up for the weight, but the added weight will affect your handling.
I would say iron for a mostly strip car. Stay aluminum for street/road race/autocross

Strokeing it is an option. The tsp rotateing assymbly is right in line with what i was thinking of spending. Although the car would be down for a bit longer do to pulling the engine and waiting on the local machinest. Like i said this is just some ideas so i can make a plan and stick with it. I donnot road race or autocross this car. Its street driven and Drag raced.

I talked to Kyle at TMS about a 370 a couple of weeks ago and he told me the difference in weight is only 70 lbs! The 241's will be choking it a little, but if you can later upgrade to TMS p&p 243's/799's you will be running dang near 500 hp.

I vote for figuring out what the problem is first. An intermittent noise don't sound like a bearing or rod. Maybe your short block is okay. Just because the cam and valve train parts are fairly new does not mean you can totally rule out the top end stuff. Have you done a compression check yet?

Goin down the hwy at about 70 this you can hear threw the floor. No vibration. When you stop the car it continues for about a minute or 2 then goes away. I had the heads re worked, new lifters, new exhaust gaskets new mls head gaskets ls2 trays, new trickflow pushrods. It sounds like its coming from underneath is where its loudest. Plugs are tight. o2s are tight. rockers check out good and are torqued to spec. All that new stuff hasent changed the noise one bit. Only way to make it happen is to go down the hwy at 70-75 keeping engine at around 1600 or so. Decelerateing makes it worse.I can cruise around town betwween redlights all day and not a sound.

Heres the car the morning after the first video. Not a sound. Sounds completly normal. I drove the car all day this day and couldent make it do it. Im runing out of places to look other than pulling the pan and taking a look. I have never seen a bearing knock and go away . Usually if its a bearing its gonna stay knocking. Its not going to fix itself but IDK..Im runing outta ideas

It did this with the original ls1 lifters the car came with. Thats why i replaced them. I did it the first hwy drive i took it on after the lifters were installed. Changeing the lifters and all the other stuff i changed made no diffrence in the sound. Still comes and goes as it pleases. Still sounds exactly the same.

When considering the weight I think maybe a little common sense could be applied and compare it to an LT1 car those are iron block. Do LT1 cars do OK with all that weight on the nose?

Not physically possible. The density of aluminum is like a 1/3 of iron. Simple math will tell you the iron weights more than 70lbs over aluminum.

I pulled the LS1 out of my car and dropped in a 376ci iron block with the original 241's, and I don't regret it at all. In a streetcar, you don't really even notice the extra weight. You might in a purpose built track car, but not when you're just putting around town with the occasional romp on the throttle. If you don't get the noise figured out and you're left to decide between the two, I'd vote for the 370 all day.
