Would this be cheaper than buying a set of Clevite HX bearings?

What main bearings are you guys using for the following situation?

1. Iron block with no line-honing done. All main bores are well within spec.
2. OEM crankshaft, with no material removed. All journals are well within spec.

I measured the clearance with the Clevite P bearings installed and got 0.0012" - 0.0016". Although this is within factory spec, all my sources for "performance iron block engines" are at 0.0024" - 0.0031".

Basically, I need 0.001" more oil clearance to hit that target. After a few hours of searching, I'm still only finding Clevite MS-2199HX. Is there a cheaper alternative?

Or are you guys running iron block engines with under 0.0020" of oil clearance?

Yes, Pete is cheaper than a set of main bearings. Usually it's only $60-75 to grind and polish the crank. Main bearings are more than $100.

One of the advantages to grinding the crank like this is that he will grind each journal to the OD you ask for to give you the exact clearance you want. You end up with a lot less variation in oil clearance, if any at all. Plus, the journals will be perfectly round and straight.

Quick update - this project got sidelined by a lot of personal stuff. I won a set of free furniture when the Seahawks won the Super Bowl (Gallery Furniture promotion), but I had to "modify" my house to make it fit - big project.

I'm back on track now, dropped off the block at H Squared Racing Engines on Tuesday, and I'm going to call Pete about the crank grinding. No change of plans yet.

Very cool build. Mahle pistons look real nice. Going cathedral for smaller chambers/higher compression ???
