Default Patriot beehive spring broke

I guess I should consider myself lucky, hard to believe but this spring snapped while I was dialing in my cam. We were turning it back and forth to measure and we heard a ting sound from the back. I thought it was harmonics from my ol' beat up torque wrench that i use for leverage and thought it was a false click.

I didn't think to look at the valve springs because I had already inspected them when I pulled it out and they looked good. But when I was putting on my headers it caught my eye.

Here is a pic of the number 7 cylinder intake valve spring. Enjoy!

Lucky! Get some quality beehives on that thing man. Pac 1218/1518 or PSI 1511ML.

That is either a severe setup issue or a serious wire flaw in the spring.

Do you realize there are relatively few spring manufacturers, valvesprings are complicated to make and while there are a hundred brands you could count major manufacturers I would expect on one hand likely with a few spare fingers.

That said my take on Patriot as a whole is it is chinese stuff they try to pretend is more American than it is.

.
No setup error would ever break a beehive turning over an engine by hand.

Pull all those out and get some 1218X's and call it a day.

Thanks for the replies. I had to get something ordered from summit so I ended up ordering the comp 26918 set as it was recommended in the sticky section as well they will drop right in.

Post up pix of a "good" one. Those don't look like beehives and the retainers look mismatched.

I couldn't get the part number from the guy that did the port and valve job for me. He just said they are beehive ls1's from patriot with a setup of 110lbs @ 1.750".

I will get a pic tonight of a good one for viewing as requested. Thanks all!

Everything looks right. It looks wierd because the spring broke on the top coil.

Always a learning process.

My invoice (and only information about what was done to the head because no part numbers) only showed beehive ls1 springs, retainers, keepers, etc as separate items but no part numbers. I knew I should have asked more questions but tbh I have no idea how the seat pressure and spring values apply with calculation of the cam's profile. I need to learn more about that.

Goes to show, don't just trust "they are the professionals".

How did you calc what would be an appropriate seat pressure for my cam? Just curious now. Thanks!

Wait, are you running Scorpion rockers with a beehive? Really?

BTW just wanted to add that I found another spring broken in the same exact location (where the seat rests) on the number 6 cylinder intake valve this time.

I have 918's in there now and I performed the idle to temp break in procedure and let it cool down. I hope these will last longer this time

Wow.
2 springs in the same engine at almost the same time.
If it had to happen, you should be glad it occured before startup.
I would count myself as being lucky.

2 springs in the same spot something more is going on. I would not expect that with low quality wire with imperfections, would expect random locations, now granted some aeras of the spring see more stress but still same exact location before startup just doesn't feel like coincidence.

Take the scorpions off and put stock rockers back on.
