The Mobil 1 10W40 has much better shear properties than the 5W30. If you're set on using M1, use the thicker oil since 5W30 is watery thin.

Redline 0w-40 here. One of the top oils IMO.

While on the subject of oils, anybody have any opinions on what oil filters they prefer. Tried to find the thread but couldnt but remember reading somewhere on this site a couple of guys having problems with some of the fram oil filters and having low oil pressure. after changing to "I think" AC Delco filters they instantly had about 20 psi more. Curious if anybody else had had a similar problem. Or what filters you guys all use?

I wasn't saying anyone here was marketing anything. I was saying that nearly all the opinions posted are based on marketing rather than data.

I'm using M1 10w40 15k oil that gets changed every 10k in my 01 Silverado because where I'm at, there is loads of dust in the air, lots of heat, and I'm running the dog **** out of my truck all the time. I used to run RP 10w30 in there but found that I gained a little power when switching to the M1 15k oil, that and the RP was $9 a qt. I also noticed a change in pressure from switching from the Fram Extra Guard filter to the M1 Filter, there was a 8-10psi boost in using the M1 filter. I change the filter every 5k no matter how the oil looks and when I do, it gets a dose of Zmax in there as well as a new filter.

I don't use the oil because of some commercial ploy but because it works for my application, that and I can get this junk for cheep at $3 a bottle through a friend of mine over at the Pep Boys in town.

Just my .02

I have a kit sitting in my garage to send off a sample next oil change (meant to do it last time but forgot until it was already drained and you have to get a sample from mid drain.

My reason for using Castrol is simple: it made the top end quieter than any other I've used.

It was loudest with Mobile 5w-30.

German Castrol Syntec 0W30, 8 bucks a quart on amazon.
VR1 10w-30 Synthetic 10 bucks a quart on amazon.
My car is stock except for a lid. I do hear tapping noises coming from my motor, might be serious might not. Which should I go for? And is the VR1 labeled as a "racing oil" because of the additives put in it? There is a little disclaimer that says it shouldnt be run on the street. Decisions....

If your local Autozone or Advance stock it, you can get 5 qts and a good filter for $30-32 when they are having their Castrol sale (usually once a month).

If they don't stock it, ask them if they could.

Is this the stuff we are talking about when we say the German Castrol 0w-30. I assume so since the site list it as correct for BMWs.....

Castrol 06244 EDGE 0W-30 SPT Synthetic Motor Oil

I have heard others mention the German stuff as well so I guess its pretty popular. Does it have the same additives as VR1 etc.? Do I need them in my stock car? Whatever gives m the best protection is what i want.

BTW, I hope I'm not coming off as too much of a noob here. I've been working on cars since i was old enough to differentiate wrench and socket sizes and hand them to my father. I'm coming from the 5.0 world and never ran anything other than Mobil 1 10w-30. never had a problem. These LS motors seem a little more finicky though so im just trying to figure out what is right. (they make more power too, which is a bonus)

Any good oil is fine really.

Yes, the Castrol Edge with Syntec Technology 0w30 is "German Castrol". From what I understand is that European standards for "synthetic" oils are higher than US standards and it is required to be from a better base stock.

Like I said, it is $30-35 for an oil change special with a premium filter when it's on sale and it makes my top end quieter. But if I can't find it when I need it I won't hesitate to grab Pennzoil Platinum, Valvoline SynPower, or some other top brand synthetic.

If you are changing it in under 10,000 miles it doesn't matter much. If you are changing it at 3k miles you are pissing away money and should just get regular oil.

Thanks. Think I'll go with the Castrol and save a few bucks. With the amount of miles I put on this thing think oil changes are going to be done once a year rather than based on miles. I would still like to know if this stuff has the same additives as VR1 and why the call that "racing oil"
