pac 1518 valve springs I'm planning on getting pac 1518 valve springs and was wondering if I would need to shim them to within .050 of coil bind due to my larger and heavier valves-2.02/1.57. I used a mic to measure the installed height and it came out to 1.775. The cam is an eps 222/226 .600 lift 115 lsa. Stock rockers with trunion upgrade, ls7 lifters. Thanks for any advise, Mike |
After doing a fair amount of research on this subject, shimming the valve springs seems like a good choice. It sounds like it can actually increase longevity which I don't fully understand yet. I have tried to get them to .070, at least. |
Is it safe to use the stock seats and retainers? or do I need to get tool steel or titanium retainers. |
Yes you can use the stock seats and retainers, but titanium retainers would be a good idea with heaver valves. Do you have a shim/s under the spring seats now? With a 1.775 seat height and .600" lift you would be at .035" from coil bind, so if you have any shims under the spring seats I'd remove them an get the seat height back up to at least 1.790" for .050" from coil bind. |
Right now I have my car apart. Waiting on the cam to come from eps. I have the comp cams 26926 duals on there with a .060 shim. One of our sponsers suggested the duals with a .060 shim and thats what i used on the cam I just took out but they are really noisey and i'm very picky about valvetrain noise. After talking to some people I think the duals are just too much and I want to go with a quality beehive like the pac 1518s. I'm just not sure if I should shim them or not. The previous cam got pitted and some lifters got destroyed and thats why the duals were suggested for more pressure but I don't know if thats really the cause. I've went through 2 cams and a set of lifters in the past year. So I don't know if its a spring pressure issue or just bad cams. They were comp cams btw. I just don't want this to happen again. Thanks |
I measured with a micrometer with only the seat and retainer, no shims and came up with 1.775. But that was with the seat and retainer that came with the duals. I was told that with those springs I would need a .060 shim to be at .050 from coil bind. I'm sure if i measure with the stock seat and retainer it will be different. I haven't measured that yet cause I didn't know if I could even use them or not. |
The 1518s will work perfectly fine with the stock gm spring seats and retainers. Yeah the 26926 duals have a open pressure of 448 lbs, that's with the seat height set at 1.835", so your open pressure was over 450 lbs(to high). That's a lot more pressure than the PAC 1518 open pressure of 318 lbs. |
Sweet. Thanks for the helping me out. I appreciate it. Would you put titanium retainers or tool steel retainers on if it was you? And if so which ones would work with the 1518's? |
For that added insurance(better control) I'd most likely go with the Titanium Comp Cams #772-16 about $263 ,if the higher cost isn't a factor, or PAC-R511 titanium about $245 http://www.ws6project.com/user_stor/...-26915-26918-/ FYI, any of the retainers or even seats for the Comp Cams 915/918 valve spring will work. |
What about the pac 1519 springs? They have a little more seat and open pressure. I'm just concerned about having enough pressure with the larger valves. But if you think the 1518's will be fine to use then i'll just get those. I just noticed pac sold those so I thought I'd throw it out there and see if the 1519's would be even better to use. I ordered the titanium retainers and will be using the newer design gm 1 piece seal/seat. I ordered a beehive micrometer too so I can check the height again. Thanks. |
You'll be fine if you're using stock rockers. |

Yeah, by all means go with the 1519 (150 lb. seat, 363 lb. open) or the 1219X (145 lb. seat, 358 lb. open), or the 1211X (130 lb. seat, 370 lb. open).. I thought you already had the 1518s otherwise I would already steered you towards these. BTW, the 1219X and 1211X cost about $50 less. |
Jakefusion- i'll be fine with 1519's or 1518's. and poltergeist 02 i actually found the comp cam titanium retainers on amazon for $210. |
No I don't have the springs yet. I just want to make sure I get the right ones though. So basically any of those springs would be sufficient? Are there any you favor more than others? |
If you went thru that many parts last year you need to find someone else to help you with the valvetrain. Not a fan of the behive stuff the dual lunatti stuff has worked perfect for me. 13k on dads car with no issues 228 230 .600 .600 Tim |
I thought the 1518 would be fine, but my preference for a beehive is the PSI 1511 or PAC 1211X since they both are 130/370. I'd also look at the 1519 with it's 150lbs closed and 377 open. Would have no problem controlling things. Honestly, though, just because the EPS lobes can use a beehive, I'd still consider the BTR Platinums with Ti Retainers for 299 and call it a day. |

Well I called Pac and they suggested the 1219x springs so they should be here tomorrow. I measured the installed heights tonight and they range between 1.780 and 1.785. I'm wondering if I should shim them or not. The specs for the 1219x springs are- installed height-145lbs @ 1.800 open- 358lbs @ 1.175 coil bind- 1.100 max lift- .625 spring rate- 340 Again the cam is an eps 222/226 .600 115lsa. Thanks |
