crank's bent +.100"

yep that's right, the machine shop says it's bent over 100 thousandths. I spun a bearing (#3) and all else looked great, no other visible wear or damage and all of the other bearings (rod and main) looked great. but now I'm told that the crank is bent beyond repair (obviously)

I have yet to go over there this afternoon and check it out but damn that hurts. That much bend seems so unlikely (nearly impossible) without any other damage, right?

Sounds weird.

did this come out of a motor that ran?

ROGERSPERF. Apr 30, 2004 05:10 PM

It all depends how bad you spun that bearing. The more heat that is built up from a spun bearing the more the crank will bend from it.

Hey Troy! Long time no talk to! Just saw Jerm wednesday when him and scottyk came down to Oscar's. If you are in need of something, the stock motor's coming out of my car in late June so let me know if you still need a crank by then or even the whole shortblock if your block is bad too. Hope everything turns out though!

Hey Chris!
Yeah I'm in pretty rough shape here...
Things keep looking worse all the time. I really need/want to get it back together in time for the Power Tour but if the cost gets much more the wife will kill me before then.

Guys the motor was running (pretty darn good) at the time. But! I can't really say exactly how long it ran after the fact. I was running some pretty hot laps at Road America when it went. But I never even lost (noticable) power, vibrated, or anything. Just pulled into the paddock at the end of the session, pulled off the helmet, and then realized that something wasn't sounding too good :eek2: (Oh trust me, I feel like more of an idiot than you think I am)

Like I always tell people (my dad) >>> "I may learn things the hard way, but at least I learn them"

This is not a fun way to learn about the "(not so) mighty LS1" :bang:

here's a question:
I see a lot of 6.0 liter cranks and parts for sale>>> Are these the same as the 5.7 (LS1) ???

Yet another "I'm still learning" question :emb:

I think they are the same except that the 6.0 crank is not gundrilled I think it is heavier? I am not a 100% sure on this I know that there are some differences in some of the years of the 6.0 cranks so make sure you buy the right one ETC... I am sure some one who knows for sure will be able to tell you what to look for sorry I wasn't more help to you.

TK 14 SS Apr 30, 2004 08:45 PM

Ohhhhh boy
It sure is bent! We set it up on the two end main caps and rotated it with a fixed indicator (kinda "redneck engineering") on the center main journal, and DAAAAMN we can actually see the variance of about 1/16-1/8 of an inch, it is un-freakin'-believable! but it is definitely bent beyond belief, we were awestruck.

Although I guess that says something about the 6 bolt mains and the bottom-end "strength", this thing should've come apart or wrecked a whole lot more.

no shit...youd think that would vibrate your brains out....sorry to hear that man!

Valvegod sells cranks for like $150.

valvegod@aol.com

5.3 and 6.0 cranks are the same after 2000 I believe.

Thanks guys!
Yeah, there are actually quite a few stock cranks "on the market" but I opted for a brand new one for $300 (Ebay). That way my crank doesn't have more miles than the rest of my engine/car, and I think tahts a good thing.

I also realize that now with the new crank and bearings I'm basically looking at another "break in" period, especially before getting the tuning done (which was scheduled before the "mishap", and has just been tentatively rescheduled).

Troy
BTW- I figure that the bent crank could make a pretty cool seat pedestal (bar stool)
