Default recipe for 550+ wheel HP on a 408???

So ive been searching around and can't find anything that can help me on making 550+ wheel HP

my setup:

6.0 iron block bored .030

4.000 manley crank
6.125 h beam compstar rods
4.030 wiseco pistons
ls3 gmpp heads
fast 102 throttle body and manifold

compression calculated at about 11.4:1

cam not specd out yet, but im working on that.

Anyone know if this will be potential 550 wheel horses? I know cam has to do with it too.. should the ls3 heads from gmpp be good or is there any better heads like AFR or tfs? Ect ect...

anyone have a recipe to make 550+ wheel? Ive seen some 408's make from 480 to 560.

Youre gonna be close. Don't hold back on cam duration... 12:1 static, 320+cfm heads, and big cam will get you there.

Ahh there is a whole thread on just 402/408 HP results. Check it out. IM sure you will find what you are looking for.

^^ like he said, you will be close. IMO, don't penny pinch on the heads no matter what, even if that means holding off on building your machine for another month or two. You gotta get that motor to breathe. Build your cam around those heads and you should be fine.

Honestly, money isnt an issue right now, since ive been saving up for what I want. And if can get better heads for little more its fine. Seems like the ls3 gmpp heads flowed pretty high. Thanks guys

You'll need better heads than those LS3s. Those will need to be properly tailored to the rpm range you wish to produce. That along with the right induction and the proper cam is very achievable in a 408.

I agree with the Predator. If money is no option then dont use LS3 heads.

If you to spend some cylinder head money I just dyno'd this past weekend my 416 with very good results. The TF 235 heads are modified extensively by Chris Frank.

We made very good power with what many would call a small camshaft, drive ability is a very big factor with me.

You might see just at or slightly under 500 with those heads and what I assume is an OEM manifold.

To get 550+ out of a 4.03 bore 408 you're going to need some killer heads and a FAST.

If you're stuck on using LS3 heads, get some MAST ones or ones ported by someone better than GMPP.

TFS 245s, 250s duration cam, and 12.5:1 will hit 550+ with a ported FAST 102 and a free flowing exhaust.

I've got some AFR 230's for sale. Brand new! They were going on my 402 that would've made about 430 RWHP with a medium cam.

It's all about the head work to get killer flow and ultimately good rwhp numbers, if that's what you're looking for. I just wanted a motor that would go 10's.

Very similar build that I'm about to undertake. As far as heads, I have been looking at TSP/PRC LS3 260cc, TSP/PRC LS7 265cc, MAST LS3 255cc, just to name a few.GL with the build.

AllPro, TFS, AFR are great heads

Have Brian Tooley do a little extra work to some TFS 225's and you will be good to go. FAST102 and some quality long tube headers.
