Default Not having any luck with main bearing clearance - 5.3 iron block

Hey guys,

I'm putting an LM7 together and am not having any luck with main bearing clearance.

I'm shooting for .0025 to .0030 which seems to be commonly recommended around here for clearance.

First set of bearings I bought were Clevite P series - MS2199p. I checked with plastigauge first which indicated somewhere around .0018-.0020 clearance. I then checked with a micrometer and dial bore gauge, and came up with the same measurements.

Fast forward, I bought a set of Sealed Power 152M 1X, .001 undersize. I installed them tonight, and they are reading .0050 clearance with the dial bore gauge.

Any suggestions? Does anyone else have experience with these or other bearings and can suggest another set to try based on the data above?

I'm really hoping to avoid ending up with $1000 worth of bearings in this motor..

Thanks!

I've never seen anywhere near .005" with FM bearings. Are you sure you're doing everything correctly?

I used a combination of Clevite H and HX bearigns to get my clearances spot on. Expensive, but I'm happy with the results.

Yep, triple checked and even slept on it. The 152M 1X measure out to .005 every time I try. I put the P series back in and they are still measuring around .0018-.0020

I might try a set of standard 152M's. But if they are only .001 tighter than the 1X's, then I'll still be way too high around .004...

Open to any other brand suggestions, was hoping to avoid buying two H series sets .. but its looking like that might be what it comes down to.

Ordered the MS-2199H. Will order a set of HX's if needed.

Clevite's site has the MS-2199P listed as max clearance of .0018 here:
http://catalog.mahleclevite.com/lv/d...S2199P&cm=2767

The MS-2199P's are listed as .0026 here:
http://catalog.mahleclevite.com/lv/d...S2199H&cm=2767

I'm hoping since I was around .0018 with the P's that I'll be on the larger side with the H's right around .0026.

Thanks for the input.

Hello everyone, I know when I was mocking up My engine and when the block was on the stand and the crank was on the ground when I went to put the crank in it went in and rested on the main shells in the block what seemed like just fine but if I imediately put the caps on and torqued them then the crank would not turn because of the sagging of the block a thous or 2 . So I fabbed a bar onto My engine stand to support the opposite end of the block from the end that is mounted and that helped . Just some food for thought as that could make clearances a little off .

You should try King Tri-metal bearings.

I got the Clevite H series MS-2199H standard size bearings today. They are dead on - right around .0027
