Default Cam Choice w/ AI 243 226cc

I just picked up a set of AI 226cc 243 heads from a member on here. I have had a few ideas on different cams to choose from. Little info on the car first:

99 Firehawk
Stock bottom end LS1 with T56
Full Bolt-on's (LT's, Fast 92/92, UDP, SSRA etc etc)
Moser 12-bolt w/ 4.11s
Minor lightening

Car sees few miles per year, car might see 1 drag strip and 1 autocross course per year. Car is for pure enjoyment only. Being a stock bottom end, max RPM I would like to see is 6700. I touched base with Martin at Tick since I have liked all of the results they have been getting, and he recommended the SNS stage 2. Looking at the DCR calculator spreadsheet, that would put me around 10.8 static and 8.5 DCR. Just wanted to get a few more opinions. Anything south of 450rwhp would be a disappointment, and I would like to see the car trapping near 120mph.

If Martin suggests the SNS stage 2, then that is what I'd do. Did you discuss him doing a custom grind for you? I don't see 450 rwhp being hard to achieve at all given your current mods

What more info do you want? Do whatever Martin suggests. I have yet to see someone not 100% pleased with what he suggests.

I am just open to others thoughts and suggestions. I'm not saying anything about Martin and its about a 99% chance I go with Martin & Tick as it seems to fit all the things I am looking for.

Id say for you Martin @ Tick, Phil @ AI, or Ed Curtis @FTI. Plus some dude just made 430 rwhp with Martins SNS 2, hand ported 799s, and a LS6 intake on a dyno thats known for being stingy. I would think with the FAST and AI's magic you should be close to 450 even with your rear and gears not being as dyno friendly.

I guess I will be the first one to say it because everyone thinks there is magic in the cam. I would be more worried about the condition of the valve job then what off the shelf cam your going to run. I would also want to know how tight are the guides. There is more power in the valve job and guides then there is between the small variations in cams.

How much are those heads milled? I would trust AI's cam recommendation, I mean it is their heads and all. I am running a Cam Motion shelf grind with those heads and it runs very good compared to other cars in the area. I went with it based on Damian's (Spartan Performance in GA) recommendation. I would have no problem calling Futral, TSP, or EPS for a custom cam either. All seem stand up in my book.

Truth, Truth, and TRUTH.

OP, best thing to do is get on the horn and start talking to folks and see what's recommended. Steve has pretty much hit the nail on the head. Plethora of knowledge here, but be willing to dig for it.

See what the recommendations are and most importantly, be honest with yourself, as that's normally the hardest obstacle to overcome.

Another option is find people with cammed cars and take a ride with them, that will give you an idea of what you like.

I think it is worth reaching out to Josh at Spartan. He spec'd me a custom design from Cam Motion for my set up and I could not be happier.

And with all these so eager to custom spec you one, and it will typically still cost about 400 give or take, I still bought a "shelf" grind based on his recommendation for the full 400. Meaning it was my choice to not have one custom spec'd. With my basic combo I really felt it wasn't needed.

All you need to do OP is get with someone you trust and have faith in them to hook you up with the right cam. All the names mentioned in this thread are well respected in the LS community and will do a fine job. It's up to you to be honest and upfront on what you are looking for out of the car and provide them with all the aspects of your build so they can design the cam around all of that.

I'M PLENTY CONVINCED THAT AN OLD BROOM HANDLE WOULD MAKE BAD-

I had a good laugh,

But seriously. We all know a turned down hickory handle makes the best midrange torque.

OP, Ed Curtis @ FlowtechInduction. He'll get you the cam you NEED, spec'd specifically for YOUR combo and YOUR goals.

Appreciate all the input from everyone. It's most likely a winter project do I have plenty of time to narrow the whole combo down. Definitely interested in the turned down hickory handle LOL
