Default LS7 cam, springs, and retainers in a 5.3

I have new LS7 cam, valve springs, and retainers that I would like to use in a 2000 5.3L. Will it fit/work? I've heard some people say that the timing cover will need to change but I'm not sure about that.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. Would you please explain why I will need to swap the gear and the cover? The LS7 cam is 3 bolt. Is the 5.3L a single bolt cam?

The LS7 cam doesn't have the reluctor on the rear of the cam that the cam position sensor needs. That's why putting the cam position sensor in the cover with the single pole timing gear is needed.

You also have to remember the LS7 cam came in the 427 and the 5.3 is like 327, Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't that cam be a dog at the bottom end.
Just food for thought........

That’s what I was thinking, the 5.3 is usually known for having some pretty good low end torque but with that LS7 cam in there it may loose a lot of that. Though, the higher RPM HP #'s would be nice with the LS7. The 5.3's I've seen usually act pretty well with the C5 Z06 LS2 cam, they get a nice curve for power and torque.

My 2c.

It's a modified engine. Changing heads, intake, exhaust.

I have a LS6 cam, springs, intake and long tubes going in my 5.3. Do you guys think it's worth the effort? Any guess on hp or torque?

You can't use the springs either. They are meant for a taller installed height, so when used on a 5.3L, they will break. Every single one of them.

Thanks. That was my next question. I was planning to use 243 or 799 heads. Do those also have a shorter install height than the stock LS7 heads/springs?

Yep. All of the cathedral port heads will be around 1.80" installed height while LS7's are about 1.950".

Would it be a big deal to machine the spring pockets 0.150" deeper?

Yeah, the roof there is already kinda thin especially when they're ported. Some of the old CNC programs actually caused that area to get too thin and the rocker boss would pull out of the head.

Why machine the heads? Just get the correct spring, lots of choices.
PSI 1511, comp 918, PAC, I believe even the LS6 or LS9 springs might be enough.
