Lq4 build. It's cammed... What next for good reasonably priced power
I have a 82' Chevy truck with a lq4 that has long tubes, 2 1/2" x pipes. 85mm throttle body, CAI, 3:73 gears, a built 4L60E that i hope doesnt get destroyed soon. and a comp cam part number 54-459-11 that cam has a .617 intake lift and a .624 exhaust, duration 231 int 239 exh. With 113 lsa. Can anyone give me a good idea on the next step, I'm thinking heads, I want to keep some drivability. Believe it or not that huge cam still has good drivability. Some day I'm goin to go with a power adder just not sure what route yet. Probably turbos, small shot of nitrous.... I appreciate all the help I can get!!

I have the same combo as you and i have a ls6 intake and a 3600 stall in a th350. I am very curious how this setup will run at the track. I have a nitrous kit that i plan on running a 100 shot also but id like to have a strong combo n/a so i will be looking at heads soon. Have you ran at the track yet? I am also very interested in any other improvements on this combo and a head recomendation.

No I haven't ran it at the track yet, I just recently put the cam in it and I'm trying to get the tune right now. I just know I won't be satisfied with my current setup alone... Who is anyway!! I haven't went with a stall yet either. I'd like to see if this trans holds up before I invest in one really. But the truck is really strong. What is you setup in? Have you ran it at a track?

that is a descent size cam .what heads are you using ? 317 ? mite need more static compression .either mill your current heads or get some 243/799 heads .or do you want ported heads ?check out Texas Speed or vengeance racing .what intake do you have ?

My setup is in a 88 trans am. The car is still in paint and body mode so it wont be ready till spring. I am running the holley hp so i dont have to mess with tuning if i dont want to.

Gary, I have factory lq4 heads now which yes I believe are the 317s, I would like to have better flow at a good cost so another set of factory heads would be ideal but if I could get aftermarket heads with better flow and a little higher compression for a little more cost I would be up for it, I just want to be able to run pump gas. I'm new to the Ls style engines so I don't know all the secrets and tricks. And to EMFH how do you like the Holley hp setup? Have you been able to run the car yet? Is it worth it?

I would get some good ported heads. Believe it or not, once I installed my heads the driveability actually improved. I was pretty good before, but is better now. I aded tons of power, and picked about .8 in the 1/4. But thats in a 3rd gen camaro.

Fast84, thanks for the input, around what compression did the 243s put you at, and did you have them milled also? That cam is pretty similar to mine with a extremely similar setup and those are some great times which excites me, even though I'm in a 4300lb truck should still have decent times. How do you like the carb setup, I've kicked around the idea because I'm sick of ALWAYS having tuning issues and trouble codes!!

I think that I am around 10.5 comp unmilled 64cc's. I like the carb setup, its easier to me as I am a little old school. The car went from 11.9s to 11.1s with just a head swap, and a new tune up. Was able to go 10.4s on a 72 jet spinning and pedaling it. Look at the texas speed stage 3 243s. The company that did mine is no longer around. Sdparts also hast a milder ported set of chevrolet performance heads for a bit cheaper.

I would definitely recommend trying to find some 243 or 799 heads for that build. if you get them ported of course it would be a plus. The main thing is you will be gaining significant compression without losing flow and piston to valve clearance. More compression always helps big cammed cars!

So what about a set of ported and polished 853 head that have been milled .020" and has a flow rate of 329 on intake at .600 and 259 on exhaust at .600? They are unused and worked by TEA. The seller is asking $400. Well that's what the bid is currently at...

I have started and had the car running but not driving yet. I really like the holley set up the first time i started the car it startled me when it fired so quickly im used to it taking a few seconds to start but it fired immediatly. By the time i figured the cost of a harness and ecu plus a tune i got the holley system for a few bucks more and i will never have to pay for another tune definatly worth it in my book. I can tune if i want and i can change cams, heads, or anything i want when ever i want with out paying for a tune.
