Default Stupid question? Will the cam come out the back of the motor?

My tranny is out, and the front cover off the motor, clutch is off, I'm wondering if I pull the timing set, and the rear cover off the motor, can I slide the cam out the back? Would save pulling the Rad, condenser, grille, and hood latch.

All the cam journals are the same size (2.166"). I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work - assuming you had the clearance, and the cam gear was removed from the front.

Makes it easier if you use a 12" holesaw in your firewall, you don't have to chop the cam in to 4" pieces as it comes out.

Just make sure you get dowels in to hold the lifters up. That can be done in the rear as well.

in theory it should come out but it makes no sense, since you'll still have to remove the timing cover and cam gear, so once you are there, why not just pull it out?

Lol, well I think the motor will be angled back enough, so that the cam can come straight out, it's not up that high in the block is it? Keep in mind this is on a Colorado, not a cramped F-body

OK good to know!

Because Tranny clutch and flywheel will be out to change the tranny to the T56, the rear main seal would be wise to replace, so the cover will already be off.

removing it from the back saves me draining the a/c system, removing the grille, Rad, hood latch etc.. if it works it will save 1.5hrs, and the cost of refilling the a/c

But I will take a closer look maybe it will hit the tranny tunnel at some point, in which case, the condenser will be coming out.

How long is a LS cam? and how far down from the highest point of the bell housing is the cam centre line?
