Default what to buy when ls1 reaches its fate?

so when the day comes and our strong ls1 motor reaches its last leg: what are some cost effective options for some of us that dont have unlimited funds to replacing that motor?

some people seem to like the 408 lq9 stroker swap?
what are the other options that are Cost efficient

The definition of 'other options' would be anything other than another LS1, so your options are almost unlimited. You could grab a 5.3 and overbore it out to a 5.7 and basically have another LS1 for half the price if you wanted to do it that way.

seems like you would be doing extra work for no reason when you can prob just pick up another used ls1 with not very many miles for a decent price

LS1s go for about $2500 around here. 5.3s go for $400. A bore with new pistons is about $600. I would be willing to do the extra work to save $1500 for basically the same end-result.

Go LQ4 6.0L. You can pick up a shortblock for 7-800 and swap everything over.

ok...
so we have an lq9 swap...which the only way that would even be remontely considered a cheaper replacement option is if most of the parts/accessories from the original LS can swap over to that new motor
but an lq9 with fully assembled w/ new heads your looking at $7k all day.... then whatever components that wont swap over..... plus the price of the actual swap.
*unless you can find it used in decent condition without too many miles*

then there is a 5.3 overbored

$7K for an LQ9? Someone is ripping you a new one.

Btw, a majority of the LS1 stuff will swap right over. As it will to a 5.3, and a 4.8, and on and on.

and i dont mind a used motor/engine....but whatever it is i would want it not have too many miles on it...the purpose is to replace it with something that would last a while.....
and maybe even replacing it with something that you can swap your original mods over

brand new lq9 408 stroker shortblock runs about 4k$ give or take shipping....then if you need new heads? another 1200-1500

I've seen LS engines last 250k+ as long as they're taken care of. Buying a new engine won't guarantee that it will last any longer unless you get a warranty.

So you're wanting a new motor? Probably not the best option for a limited budget.

LS3 heads are $500/each with valves/springs already installed.

I guess I never understood spending so much money on a forged/stroked shortblock when the amount of power going to be made is usually less than half what a stock shortblock could handle.

Mine had over 120k miles on it when I started modding the motor and it's still going strong.

I guess this is where DIYers and people who pay for their work get separated. I would personally buy the 150k if it was cheap enough, and do bearings and rings/hone myself and call it done. Probably replace head gaskets while I'm in there. Would take an afternoon and a few beers.

i did not say it had to be new ...just simply the most feasible replacement options....

maybe just another used ls1 without too many miles on it.

hexen said 5.3 overbored.

thats what ill be looking into... i just purchased a used z28...has close to 100k with boltons and i will be doing more work to it...at some point it will reach its demise... so im thinking ahead of time about some feasible replacement options.... but not downgrading

This. Just freshen up the block with bearings, gaskets, and rings and you've got a motor that will last you.

I take it by 'downgrade' you mean displacement wise? Cause those 4.8s make some INSANE boosted motors.

I'm gonna try to blow my LS1 motor this summer so I can upgrade to a LQ4 6.0 and just freshen up that block. I'll be able to do a swap for under a grand.
