Mystery Oil
Hey guys, I've got a bit of an issue. It's a not LSx vehicle, but nonetheless is a problem/ solution some of you have encountered. So I have a Ford Mustang Gt, 4.6 SOHC. When cold the car runs fine and everything. One hot, upon high vacuum situations (coasting downhill cause it's a stick) and free revs I get a really annoying valve train sounding ticking. The cams are tight. Chain guides are good. No exhaust leaks. The previous owner thought it was rod knock, but it shows no misfire data in the cpu. It also sounds move valvetrain-ee to me, so I pulled all the roller-followers, which are essentially rockers. No obvious issues. Next step is to check the lifters/lash adjusters. The cam girdles and under valve covers look like they have some varnish or something on them, so i was thinking about pulling all of the lash adjusters and soaking them in mystery oil in hopes of maybe there's some gunk or something inside. What kind of mystery oil do you guys use? Or has anyone had any experience with anything that does? Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys

Not sure what year your car is... but early 3V mustangs will develop what sounds like rod knock. Make sure to check the timing chain tensioners. My roomate has a 05 3V and the dealership said it was a spun bearing, but found the drivers side chain WAY loose and hitting the front cover!

I haven't been able to check oil pressure yet, I am going to put a physical guage on it soon. The guage on the dash reads in the middle while cold or hot. The car is a 2001 Mustang GT, 4.6 SOHC. It's not the 3v, it's the 2v,l. I just took all of the roller followers and lash adjusters out and am soaking them in auto transmission fluid. Hopefully it will eat any deposits. Timing chain guides look good, pulled them off to replace the camshaft on the passengers side

Replaced all of them on the drivers side. I drove with it like that for probably 2 years before finally doing that. Originally, I switched brand of oil, and it helped a little. Went from German Castrol 0w30 to a 50/50 mix of Royal Purple HPS 5w30 and Royal Purple XPR 5w30.

I already have the lash adjusters out, and soaking. I believe I found one that seems to have about a centimeter of preload missing like maybe the spring broke inside. Don't know how real oil pressure would change it though. might start with a thicker oil then change it. Preciate it guys

Pretty sure I put in either 5w-30 or 10w-30. Long story short, one of the cam lobes/ roller followers on the passengers side got f'ed up and put miniscule shavings if any into the oil. so I was just looking to get in different oil ASAP. If the new lash adjuster doesn't stop the ticking im going straight to the thicker oil.
JakeFusion- Rotella is amazing stuff. I use it in our F-150 with 240k and I went from using a quart every thousand to a quart every oil change (Same motor ironically)

The soaking didn't help, and neither did replacing the suspicious lash adjuster. I'm beginning to think it's in the bottom end, like the bottom half of a piston is cracked or something.
