Swapping to L92's worth it? I'm sure this has been covered alot, and I've read a fairly large amount of threads without getting any definitive answers. So, forgive me but I figured I'll created my own thread. My current setup: LQ9 .030 over LS2/LQ9 oversize replacement pistons (brand escapes me, I'll check my machine shop receipt and report back) Scat forged rods factory crank 228R cam/matching springs 317 heads milled enough to clean gasket surface truck intake/t.b. green top 42# injectors Truck: K5 blazer, 38" tires, 4.56 gears, approx 5300# Previously this truck had a 4 speed, with the same setup the truck was an absolute monster, a blast to drive, and moved with extreme ease. Shattered clutch and went auto (4l80e) with a 3200 stall, it became an absolute pig, even with the stall the motor seemed "behind" and sluggish. I'm going back to a stick as we speak, when an 07 6.0 with L92's pretty much fell into my lap, I've already got an offer to sell it and double my money plus some.. Or, I swap the L92's onto my current short-block, have a custom cam spec/d, and carry on. So, I've read they perform great in lower RPM and build great torque, and I've read the exact opposite also. I've also read that the cam's prefer to have a 6 degree split between intake and exhaust duration, could somebody elaborate? I perused a few big name brand's off the shelf cam's and the splits seem larger? Example: EPS 222,242 and 230/246 both with an rpm range of 1500-6800 (seems would fit for torque, yet huge) Vengeance racing's 227/235 also I'm fairly positive I'll pull the trigger on the swap, just don't want to spend the money on gaskets, cam, pushrods, and a throttle body for a minimal gain.. |
I've always heard the square port heads like a larger split, even larger than 6 degrees in most cases. I assume your current heads are not ported at all, so I do think there would be a pretty significant increase in power going to the square port heads and custom cam. Just make sure you get a custom cam for the square port heads and matching parts. I assume you're going to do all the work yourself, so you'll mostly be out time and not a lot of money. You can sell the 317's and current cam too. By the way, that thing is really bad ass. |

Just don't want to go down the wrong path, I'll admit my current cam wasn't right for my setup and was a rushed impulsive decision, trying to avoid that this time.. Thanks by the way, she's awesome when she's in one piece. |
If you got a great deal on the 07 6.0 with L92 heads, I'd swap that puppy in. Get a custom cam for it and enjoy. Plus, you can always have the heads ported down the road for even more power. |
