Default Need help ASAP, trouble removing cam

We are getting the stock cam about 1/3rd of the way out and it's catching on something. I've rotated the cam while pulling, wiggled it and all kinds of other stuff. The cam can be stabbed all the way back in with no problem, but when it gets to the same spot everytime it sticks. This isn't my first cam, but this is the first time I've seen something like this happen. A little insight.

We are using a JPR lifter rod on the drivers side, the passenger side one wouldn't slide in so we used pen magnets to keep the other lifters up.

Any help or insight would be great. I'll go back to trying to get it out, but will check this post in a few minutes.

And yes I did use the search feature.

the only thing i can think of is that a lifter isnt being pulled up enough... make sure the magnets are grabbing the lifters... Goodluck.

Sounds like a lifter hangin down to me too. The only thing that would keep it from sliding out. Good luck.....

I thought it was a lifter too, but why would I be able to get a good 3rd of the cam out with no problems, I can also run about a 5-16" round rod all the way down the hold where you put the JPR rods to hold the lifters up, but on this one side I can's get the JPR rod to install.

Here are a few pix of how far we can get the cam out. It's not hanging on any lifters. Someone please give me some help. Any idea's on why the cam won't come out any further than this? And as stated above, the cam slides right back in so it's only hanging up while trying to be pulled.

Itll come out, but it has to be perfectly straight. It looks like the bearing surfaces (the big round circles) arent fitting in the bearings. It has to be straight for them to pass through since its a SNUG fit.

I've had this exact same thing happen. What we had to do was ditch those JPR tools. For some reason on some 2002+ cars the tools dont work very well, its probably due to the new lifter design or something. The lifters get locked in a location that isnt high enough to clear the mains on the cam.

I think you're going to have to refert to 16 magnets and go with that. I'll be updating documentation on cam swaps to reflect this as well.

JMX you are the man, I guess that's why LS1howto is your's. I pulled the JPR tool and put 8 more pen magnets on the drivers side and the cam almost jumped out.

This is my 4th LS1 cam install and I've done hundreds of SBC cams and never had this type of problem, but now I know. We've got about 5 more hours of daylight to try to button this one up, so hopefully it'll be makin noise shortly.

Are these the old JPR tools?
they said they revised the new ones to eliminate this problem.

I would guess they are the old ones, but even if the new ones work better, they still cost 5 times more than 16 good pen magnets & I wasted 3 hours lickin my nutz trying to figure out what the **** was up & it turned out to be a bad tool that's supposed to save you time. It's hot outside and my shade tree is outta leaves.

Thanks for all the suggestion everyone. Especially JMX.

We will be starting the car up first thing tomorrow after the radiator and other small things go back in. Can't wait to hear it.
