how to tell lq4 from lq9
Im taking a 6.0 out tomorrow with 100k on it. I bought it today $700 not needing it and want to know which it is. Its a 05 or 06 silerado 1/2 ton crewcab 4x4. 6 lug wheels so not 1500hd. cab & front are at guys shop so can get vin code yet. I know blocks have liter size on them so wiill verify that tomorrow. I know take engine apart can figure out but just want to clean it/run in camaro possibly.

thanks dude, if lq4 I will let my friend put in 81 camaro v6 car. lq9 I think it needs to stay with me for another project. Im addicted to ls collecting now. I have a L33 in 76 skylark(got to finish little stuff). started my 2nd swap, 5.3 iron block motor 4L60E into my 88 squarebody 4 door chevy truck. I getting my kick swapping/talking with other gear heads I guess.

If it's the original engine it MAY be an Lq4, they were mostly in 2500 HD trucks, Lq9 wasn't offered in that truck. With the exception of Cadillac, Denali, or Vortec Maxx, nothing else full size would have an Lq9.

thanks, I want to keep for me if it is lq9, otherwise run of mill 6.0. The guy got this from is dealing with silverado/seirra trucks. Need anything? I ask he 15 minutes away. 12 or so parts trucks but most have over 160k on them. he gotten smarter keeping engines in trucks covered. Thats cause I got on him. He has most drivetrain/wiring stuff.

Should have a casting number on the block too.

UPDATE----got motor out today, wasnt to hard no cab/front on it. I had suspicion it was a 5.3 so took off steering/altenator bracket woola a 5.3 in casting on block. getting $200 back so will have $500 into it plus pulling time. Now he looking for the 6.0 he claims to have for me inanother truck. this 5.3 turns out to have 90k on it so no biggie, good usable swap candidate for something.

Its just an extra motor for whatever. I was supposed to be getting a 5.3/4L60E 2wd combo 145k for $700 together complete everything. Then was supposed to get a 6.0 with 100k that was supposed to be in truck I took out of today. He said he bought it and was told it had 6.0(salvage auction) but turned out to be 5.3 for $700. no tranny but motor complete. at least he said he will give me back $200 on monday making it a $500 deal. collecting parts for now. I want a 6.0 just to have if not happy with 5.3 for trailor towing & such but mostly driver purpose.

I was really rooting for ya Larkman, although i know that Lq4' don't come in 1500 Series Trucks. Now you know it as well. There was always a chance it had been swapped for a 6 litre. Lq4' is in 2500 HD, and Lq9' only come in the high end vehicles I mentioned earlier.

not disappointed in no 6.0 as 5.3 are good motors/ good mpg& decent power. I have friends want things for their projects as well. Im thinking of building a rat rod of some sort with ls power. I have seen 6.0 in 1500hd trucks but this guy getting stuff from pretty much clueless. he trying to fix rusty/crusty silverado builder trucks that are better parts trucks. Im trying to keep friends well enough to get all 130k & under milage stuff he gets. others with milage higher is ok but he thinks its worth same price. I tell him no way especially if using in someone else vehicle.

There shop van is a black express van painted up with A-team theme. I bought a 4L65E from him bout last september, year on rebuild with upgrades $600. Works great anyway. He said something at time bout doing a caddy hearse conversion.

LQ4's came in in the C3 and early Denali GMC Sierra 1500 trucks. The LQ4 was also in the 1500HD trucks.
LQ9 would be in an Silverado SS, Vortec High Output, and Vortec Max trucks as well as the later GMC Denali trucks.
If he is buying these from insurance auction's, Anything could have been done to them. I have seen some poorly miss represented vehicles go through there.

I don't know Larry personally, but I've heard his name tossed aroun several swap conversations Larkman. They're several shops doin swaps in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs and most come out and play in Morocco In. during the season.
