Default Mechanical Over Rev - What did I break?

Long story short, I'm a shitty driver and hit 1st instead of 3rd at WOT. The wheels skipped for less than a second or so before clutched in. The car seemed to go into some kind of limp mode where anything over 1/4 throttle would make it bog big time. After stopping, letting it idle, and listening for any kind of strange noises, the car seems to have it's power back. No odd noises that I can hear as of yet, maybe on a cold start it'll start rapping.

Why would it have done something like this? I refuse to believe it just fixed itself. I'm gonna do a compression test and a cylinder leak down on it this week but the way it lost all power and then was restored is very odd to me.

Is it a stock motor? If so.... Check Pushrods, rockers and springs to start. More than likely you'll find a pushrod or two bent.

I did that once and almost wrecked. I got lucky since i pushed the clutch in real fast. Everything was fine for me except my underwear.

I think I would rather change the pushrods

To the OP, as suggested it is usually the valve train that suffers when this happens and damage results.

That was you about a month ago, right?

OP, you might have dodged a bullet. Someone did the same thing fairly recently, and he was just as nervous as you are right now. Probably a good idea to do the compression tests on all eight and check the pushrods. When you're checking them, sometimes you can't see they are bent real easily. Put one end in a drill and spin the drill. If it wobbles, replace it. If your pushrods survived, you're probably OK.

Myself would pull the valve covers and do a visual. And then do a compression check. If all are real close and runs good I sure it is fine!

If stock I'd definitely check for bent push rods, as mentioned.

You might not notice a difference at first but they will show symptoms eventually.

So if I find some bent pushrods, what are the chances the valves are bent along with them?

Can spinning the motor that high cause any kind of long term damage to the bottom end? Stretched rod bolt or some other fatigue? If I do end up with bent valves, I plan on throwing a set of 243s on it, but I'm not keen on throwing money into a motor that'll eat it the next time it hits red-line.

I doubt a 1-second spin will hurt the rod bolts. If you bent a valve you'll have zero compression on the cylinder. I mean dead zero. Ask how I know.

Where it's possible to bend a pushrod is if they are relatively light and you have a lot of valve spring. It's not likely, but if it were my motor I would check.

I had the heads of an ls1 last winter a friend bought for his swap, it was out of an m6 car. it had 2 bent push rods and some witness marks in a 2 pistons probably from doing this same thing. Didnt hurt the valves or springs. The car was evidently driven for a while after it happened with the bent push rods because they wore into the head from rubbing from being bent.

Would be a good idea to check the push rods as easy as it is to do.

If you are stock the one good thing stock pushrods are weak so that would most likely be the thing to bend first before the valves.

ouch, did this in my subie a few months back, hit 8500rpm (stock motor) for a split second. thankfully didn't fully release the clutch. put another 15k miles on it since and no problems.
hopefully you got lucky.

What you broke was a great chance to have a reason to replace your motor with a bigger/badder one

I kissed the Pistons when I did, of course I had a magic stick V4 in the car and broke a spring as well, everything sounded fine and one day it dropped a valve on the way home just cruising. Point being, it's cheaper to double check something and cover your *** than buying a crate motor.

Would love to, but I need to buy a motor for my '87 that's been apart for a year before I go too heavy with this one.
