Default Upgraded cam choice for my setup

OK, I here is my setup....

6.0L LQ9, ARP rod bolts, head studs, flat top pistons no reliefs
232cc Advanced Induction heads
1 7/8" longtubes 3" dual catback exhaust, 25% ATI UDP, Mamo ported FAST 102 intake, 92mm FAST TB, 100mm MAF
3.54 rear diff

Its an LS Swapped 300zx using the stock 5spd Manual Transmission.

I have a Custom 229/234 .600/.600 114+2 LSA cam

Do you think the cam I have is too small? Would I be better with a bigger cam in it and would that get me close to 500whp? What cam is recommended or is it not worth it? The car is a street car toy driven to meets, shows. Basically a weekend car sees no rain, snow or cold weather just used for fun. I'm not a big drag racer either it was built more for handling...I may do some auto cross with it. Just dont want to go through all the hassle and make 5whp or something. If I could make 20 more that would be good and still have good street manners I'd be happy.

car made 469whp & 433ft-lbs (SAE) on a dynojet.

Just wondering if I can squeeze some more power out of it and still keep the same manners.

You can always get more power out of a setup, but it's a slippery slope as far as street manners are concerned. You can probably get 5-10 more hp without really affecting how it drives much if at all, but that's kinda it. To get 15-20 more hp out of it you're going to notice more smell and harder to drive, but that's also dependent on the tuner who can mitigate that somewhat.

For autocross tho, I doubt you'd ever notice an extra 20hp from 6000rpm to redline. Some gears will be much more benefitial for you in this type of driving and you'd really feel and see the difference with say 3.91 or 4.11s...and those won't affect driveability at all.

Since it's a 300ZX, I don't know what supercharger kits would work... but, a D1 Procharger at 6psi intercooled would technically work on that setup. It'd also add probably 100-120rwhp and maintain the same manners you have now.

Yep. 11.5:1 is not that high for an intercooled setup. You're not throwing a lot of boost either.

I've toyed with just adding a Procharger to my motor as it sits. And my cam isn't even close to being right. And yet, it'd still work.

I'm running 11.5:1 compression, and wouldn't be afraid to run 6 psi via centrifugal, roots, or even a turbo setup. I've seen it done before

I hope you have access to E85 and or are planning Meth injection to be able to boost a 11.5 CR motor!

I would go with a 230/238/.620/.595/115+4 Cam Motion cam. It will have very similar manners to your current cam and will increase the mid range to top end power. And with a light car, I'm sure you can afford to loose a bit of low RPM power.

car weighed 3300lbs with a 1/4 tank of gas no one inside. There are no reliefs vut in the pistons, they are regular flat top just worried about that .620 lift....right now both .600/.600

Peak valve lift isn't at TDC & doesn't affect PTV. The cam I suggested for you will not have any PTV issues. I had a 234/242/.600/.610/114+4 cam in a 5.7 with 243 heads, 2.02/1.60 valves & had enough PTV.

Seems to make pretty good power with that cam.

One thing, why the 92mm TB on the 102mm intake? A 102 TB may push you over 470.

I had a 102 TB on it before but was having idling issues and problems tuning it so it was suggested I get the 92mm TB so I did and sold the 102 TB. But come to find out it was not the TB it was something in the tune that was causing it and I never bought another 102 TB. Thinking about doing that as well....102mm TB. I called Martin at Tick Performance and he recommended a custom 232/236 .610/.590 112 cam and said I should see about 15rwhp gains peak and all gains from 3000rpm and up with perhaps a slight loss down low which is fine with me.

So that cam will have 10* valve overlap vs 3.5* of your current cam. You did mention that you wanted to keep the same manners. Your going to find out about the bad manners of a 10* overlap cam in a manual trans car.

Martin at Tick told me that that cam he recommended would have similar manners as the cam that I have except I will not be able to drive around at 1500rpms in 5th gear or whatever. My car is a 5spd so only time its ever that low is idle or coming from a stop but my 1st gear is short so wont be there long. I've seen folks with a similar cam and they dont complain and say they drive fine as well. Is there something I dont know?

Given your intended use and how you currently use the car, I would not mess with a bigger cam. The cam you have is probably wonderful on the street, it provides you with great "useable" under the curve power, and it still makes a very good number on the dyno. Sure, you can squeeze out more HP with a bigger cam, but at the same time, is it going to be worth the cost and the possible loss of some drive-ability? Probably not, but only you can answer that question.

I'm going to take all the comments into suggestion. I appreciate the feedback thanks. This is my first small block so I'm trying to work through all this.

Very easy to boost a car with 11.5:1 compression on 93 pump gas, its all in the tuning. Low compression boosted cars are a thing of the past, and only the old school guys hang onto the notion that you can't boost a car with high compression. Over half the production cars released these days are high compression turbo cars and they have the capability to run on 87 octane through proper computer tuning.

After further research Ive seen plenty of boosted 11.5:1 CR smallblocks...just cant go crazy on the boost. But this post is about an all motor cam choice...not boosting the car.

Ok, good luck with your tuning. Sure if you want to lower the spark timing down to 10*-12*. Note that the ZR1 has 9.1 CR.

I have a 11.5 CR 418, and with 94 octane, max timing is at 22*
