5.3L Engine Identification
So I'm going to pick up a 5.3L LS soon, and what I know it's from a 2004 Silverado it's got 120,000 miles, and it's got 706 heads on it. Anyone know what type of 5.3L engine this is? Looks to have Iron block, rust on a couple edges. Only $200 so not a high risk sale. Probably not the first to ask but couldn't easily find a answer.

For $200 bucks it really doesn't matter...that's like a core charge where I am in Mississippi. (If you can get your hands on the VIN NUMBER; Look at the 8th digit, and if it's a "V" then it's a 4.8 liter Vortec and if it's a "T" then it's a 5.3 Vortec)
Either way buy the engine and enjoy it!

The casting number on the crank will tell you 4.8 or 5.3, correct?
As far as how to tell if its iron or aluminum just by looking at the block, id really like to know too....But at $200 you cant go wrong. If its aluminum then its an absolute steal.

Its likely an LM7 5.3, but could be a L59. The only difference would be the Injectors as the L59 was flex fuel and used different injectors with a different plug. Everything else between the two is the same.
The crank will casting number will tell you the displacement for those that question it.
12553482 = 4.8L
12552216 = 5.3L
The aluminum block L33 was not introduced in the silverado until 2005 and would have 799/243 castings on it.

Hey thanks guys It's a LM7, it's spins over nicely. Now what to do. I'm thinking about buying another f-body roller to put this puppy in, or a short cab short bed LS era Silverado. The goal is 10 seconds on a budget. Probably going to bore out the block to 3.905, and use some left over LS1 pistons(Forged) I have. Do I need to get the crank rebalanced to work with the LS1 rods/pistons, and does anyone know a good cheap turbo manifolds/headers for a LS?
