What to look for after water got into the motor

Default What to look for after water got into the motor

At some point last august my motor sucked up a whole bunch of water through the intake, and naturally it started to knock very bad. I've finally came around to take the motor apart. But this is the first time I'll be doing such a thing. What are some things you guys would look for? I've already removed the valve covers and the intake. Under the valve covers everything looked great. But under the intake there was a whole bunch of mud as well as dirt. Also when I dumped the oil there was no metal in it. I plan on taking the heads off over the weekend. Thank you for any advice.

Would a bent rod make the car idle or run funny? Cause the car ran and sounded fine besides an obnoxiously loud knock

Just imagine how a bent rod would look in a motor right now, it can wear out the piston skirt or cylinder wall, and can cause piston slap. Even more likely, if the rod is bent it's a bit shorter which means the bottom of piston is hitting crankshaft counter weight.

The knock could very well be the piston hitting the crank.

also, if rod is bent towords the front or back of the motor, it can lead to wearing/grooving the rod bearing

Look for a new motor. IMO

You'll just have to get it apart on a bench or at least pull the pan to see.. The the decisions start..

Ive fixed a couple out in the woods in 4x4's that got drowned. Replaced the rod,piston and put it back together.. It wasn't perfect but it drove out... I've also pulled the piston and rockers for the bad cylinder and drove them out.. so a hydro-lock isn't necessarily fatal..

I have a 6 liter iron block laying around as well as most of the things to put a 370 together

I'm hopefull that my motor isn't completely gone because it was still running completely fine , there was no stuttering, no misfire.

You may be able to get away with most parts in the motor, if rod is indeed bent, piston is most likely damaged, maybe some scrapes on the crank but nothing too major. Hopefully cylinder is in good shape. Definatly build that 6.0 though

I took all the rods out and was able to get one head off today. Nothing really looked out of place. Valve look like they rusted but that more of an effect that it set with water for over half a year. I'm gonna put up some picture let me know if you see anything. Thank you.

Between school and work I just never really had the time. And then the weather got bad and I dont have a garage. And I was kinda intimidated with taking it apart. But it finally started getting warmer and I figured what the hell its sitting anyway I doubt that I can make it any worse now. You think this motor is unsalvagable? I was hoping that I might be able to rebuild it?

Hey Vlad, do you really think Moekluse meant bent pushrods? You should check your CONNECTING RODS if water damage is suspected.

you can probably use alot out of it but after sitting submerged..it's gonna need to be hot tanked and gone through. I would personally not run it

Trying to make my way down to them haha. Btw is it possible to pull the pistons without pulling the motor out?

If you can take the oil pan off and and can get to the rod bolts, that might be possible.

Pull oil pan, pickup tube, and whindage tray and look for bent rods. It is possible to replace in the car but don't forget about all that sludge and rust..

Would it be easier to just pull the motor out? I looked at what it takes to drop the pan and it seems like a PITA haha

It might be, but that depends on what kind of vehicle it's in. 4th gen Camaros, for example, the engine is far easier to drop from the bottom of the car.
