Default Top end noise investigating

I have a ticking coming from my passenger side. I've never done any work on the top end before so I've been researching and have found a lot of new and slightly confusing information. If I'm pulling the pushrods to check straightness and reinstall the rockers, I only need to tighten down to 22 ft lbs. There's no need to check lifter preload as all of that should be consistent from factory settings, correct?

Correct if you are just checking, torque it back down youll be ok. Most of the time its lifters, rockers, or springs, but can be a bent/burnt valve also. Sometimes exhaust leaks and coil/wire issues (arcing to the valve cover etc) so check them as well!

Thank you for the reply. The sound is consistent and most noticable around 2000 rpm which I found seems to be a common problem but usually resolved when the motor reaches operating temperature. Unfortunately not my case.

Seems like lifters or rocker arm then. Check oil for metal also

I found some threads talking about rotating the crank a few times and re checking torque on the rockers, but that seems a bit arbitrary. Two passes on the torque wrench for the rocker bolts should be more than enough

Use some thread sealer on the threads for the rocker arm bolts, when I was disassembling I noticed a few rocker bolts when loosened made a slight hissing noise when loosened. Apparently they do hold some air pressure in the heads
