Default 4.8 S10 swap questions

I bought a 1999 4.8 with 133k on it and I am going to swap it into a 1999 S10 for my 14year old son. I would like to put a cam in it. Can I replace the cam without changing springs and lifters? Should I pull the heads to and clean things up? Motor came from a running truck at a reputable salvage yard. Just not sure I should go thru the motor or just run it. Thanks for the input.

Which cam do you have in mind? If the cam has more than stock lift (all do), you will need stouter springs. The cam you select will dictate which springs you need. With the mileage on this motor, changing lifters is a good idea just for peace of mind. The heads come off to change the lifters. Also, a new timing chain would be a good idea, as they stretch with use. One of the sponsors here, WS6 Store, is very good at putting packages of parts together for friendly prices. They will sell you what you need, no more or less.

If you're not planning to race it I'd leave the stock cam in. A 4.8 in a S10 is surprisingly quick.

I agree with darth. Get it in the truck, running/driving, and go from there.

Cold air box and good headers and you got 300+ hp, plenty enough in a S-10 with a teenager and raging hormones.....

300hp in a light truck could mean trouble for him. Thanks for the input.

If it came to it you could de-gear it a bit. That would help tame some of that torque. I've seen first hand a stock 4.8 in a S10 outrun a syclone.

I've had a lot of issues lately with high mileage valve springs.
If you plan on doing cam at some point, do the springs at the same time.

I'm in the process of building a 94 SWB truck for my grandson as we speak, it's hard not to over build-think what he may do. He has nearly enough "Common Sense" to tie his shoe, so it nearly needs to be bullet proof until he learns about life some what. FWIW

Use shorty headers to fit the truck frames. You'll need to notch the AC box. Move the steering column left. Probably still end up denying the headers to clear the steering. Box in your frame rails too for strength.

No way I would put a cam in this for a first time driver. It's going to be salty enough...

Those cheap fleabay stainless shortys are a direct copy of the sandersons, and they don't rust like the sandersons, AND they are like 1/2 the price. They fit well, and flow "decent" for the $.

Biggest thing on a s10 swap, is making sure you get a pan that fits. The truck pan hangs way, way too low, unless your going to make a shield for it. I have seen guys knock the bottom out of a few of those, just driving.

Yeah. Shoulda mentioned oil pan. I notched the **** outta my crossmember and reinforced it underneath which let me run a f body pan. I also lifted the truck so no real concerns. Great point you made!
