Post Buying 6.0 with a spun main bearing**PICS INCLUDED**

I have the opportunity to buy a 6.0 with a spun main for $350. I plan on rebuilding this engine and stroking it to 408. With the spun main, Is there any block damage that can be associated with this? I just want to know If a engine with a spun main could be rebuilt..

The guy also say the heads have a few exhaust bolts thats need to be removed. Is this to much work? I was just trying to avoid paying $1100 for a new 6.0 block

Have the same block trying to get rid of it LOL... Send to the machine shop and buy a stroker & rebuild kit. New valve springs and valve job. Carb with Newer MSD box. Scrap the crank as it maybe no good. Just did the same thing to a 6.0 around a month ago as to have a spare 6.0. Junked everything! Crank was no good to sell to my guy who buys factory parts. Gotta now do the same thing on a rod knocking aluminum 5.3. All may be scraped again if not $50 for the crank and $15 for good rods. Make sure the engine builder is a known Ls builder as there are horror stories.

I mean if you are building it into a 408 you are going to replace most of the bottom end. Not too much to worry about.

You need to pay attention to how bad it spun. If it was really bad, it can mess up the main bores and require a lot of work to repair.

I just tore down a 4.8 with a spun main. It trashed the block.

spun rod bearings usually aren't a big deal, you just replace the rod and grind the crank.
spun mains, I stay away from, they tear up the main saddles.

curious how it trashed the block? Unless it was the center bearing that also sets the crank thrust. I figured no matter how bad a spun bearing was you could always cut the caps and line bore it to crank....

do you have any pics? did it crack the mains journals or something? just curious to see how bad that spun bearing was.

Post #5. It can get EXPENSIVE! More than another block.

say you have to linebore the mains down .030 to clean up. now your cam is .030 closer to your crank and your timing chain is now sloppy. in addition to the cost of machining. you should be able to buy another decent 6.0 block for less than the machine work

I have heard this, but seriously, .030 is going to make a timing chain "Sloppy"??? ****, the last 3 I had open, all had "sloppy" factory timing chains. Maybe the factory had to reline bore them.

I understand, stacked tolerances add up, but .030 on a timing chain? EVERY timing chain I ever had, must be no good then if .030 is too much. As long as the drive side, is tight when you degree your cam, and put a "factory" tensioner on it, it should be fine IMO.
