Default MMS 223 heads coming, hoping for some decent gains.

Hello all, I'm a few weeks out from ordering a set of MMS 223 heads, YT lightweight rockers, a custom spec'd cam from Tony Mamo, and possibly having my fast intake worked over, as my wallet permits. I've been talking with Tony over email, taking all his advice and compiling a list of parts.

Currently, I went 11.9 at 118 with my set up that put down 438/404. 231/235 cam, stock untouched 241 heads, and a stock unported fast102 and a 102tb. 1 7/8 headers, x pipe, through a 9'' rear. the 11.9 pass was my best, but I had certainly more in the car. Shifting easy, since my trans build had about 30 miles on it. I'd say it has a 11.7-11.6 with a perfect pass, and suspension fine tuning as it sits. Car weighs 3240 with out me, so about 3420 with me. I plan on getting the car down, at the very least, 150lbs.

I'm hoping with a heads and cam swap I can see 40-50 more hp on that same dyno. Even if its not perfectly accurate, its where I had the car tuned so id like a good comparison. I don't really care about the number as much as a track time My goal is a car that'll run high tens, n/a with good weather and tack conditions. I've seen this achieved on a car with ported 243s, 235/242 cam, and a fast 92, in an otherwise identical car, so I'm hoping to get there myself.

So I figured id start this to document as I go along, get parts, Dyno time, and track time.

The rest of the drivetrain is a decently build t56 with most of the parts upgraded, pst 3.5 chromoly driveshaft, moser 9'' with 4.11s and a wave track, and a Mcleod rxt with (I believe) a lightweight flywheel.

A few questions. Is it worth it to upgrade the lifters? I have a set of brand new Ls7s. If Im leaving a good amount on the table ill upgrade.
Running 42lb injectors and a Racetronix pump and hotwire kit should be enough fuel correct? Its supposed to be good for 600whp, just want to make sure.
Will this top end set up transfer over to a larger motor? I don't plan on something crazy huge, but eventually I'd like a forged 370 or something, for piece of mind.
Can I leave my c5r timing chain and ls6 pump alone? They have maybe 8-10k miles on them
Are my goals a stretch? I'd be really happy if this picked up a decent amount of power, and dropped a bit off the e.t.

Feel free to weigh in. I have a very good tuner, and I don't drive the car much, so Im not crazy concerned with drivability, although I'm sure it will be perfectly fine.

That cam is probably fine with those heads. You'll pick up 40-50rwhp with the heads... ported the FAST will give you another 10. So you'd be in that 480-490 range, I would think. So, you're right.

Fuel will be no problem.

You can reuse your chain and pump. They are fine.

I'd do a better lifter. Use the money for the cam on a set of Johnson lifters. And Manton 11/32 pushrods. And fwiw, going to a short-travel would be good, but they become pretty costly.

Tony said I’ll have valve clearance issues with the cam, and it won’t work. I’d rather have him spec one that will be optimized anyway. I don’t mind buying lifters if they’re going to help. My current cam specs are 231/235 .617/.621 111+3

Totally agree on larger OD pushrods. Think I would do lifters as well as new lifter trays to keep things tight. One key thing is to allow enough time to correctly set the wipe on the YT rockers prior to measuring for pushrods. If you spend the time you can get the wipe pattern to a very narrow centered width. Timing chain should be fine, I would just use the service manual procedure to look over the two sprockets that drive it. If you can get a timing chain damper, that would eliminate the potential for chain wrap that these motors have at higher RPM.

I'm excited to see the results using those heads. Read up on them a couple nights ago and they sound like a killer head. Beautiful car btw man.

You said you have some left in it, I fully agree, your current power and weight you have around a full second left in it from what I've seen with similar power and weight with a big rear and being a stick car.

Default Injector SIZE = HP

Hi Sail, your question "42's" will NOT meet your HP request.

I can supply Denso "60's" the required injector for your needs.
