Very puzzling the heat issues with the other cam. Almost looked like the lifter wheels were skidding on the lobe.
I assume the lifter wheels and cam are splash lubed.
Do your lifters slide nice and free in the lifter bores?

I've personally had 0 issues with comp LS cams. All have been flawless and all have been custom grinds designed by Martin.

Yeah, first thing I did was remove both belts to remove the accessories as culprits. I pulled the lifters out to inspect them during the second cam swap and the wheels moved freely, the lifter bodies moved up and down in the lifter bores just fine, all seemed well. I’ve ran multiple Comp cams in my LT1 over the years and never an issue until now. I can’t imagine that it could possibly be anything except for a surface finish problem/cam core issue at this point especially since others have had this same problem. I agree, the way the first cam looked was very puzzling but I dyno’d the car with it and it put down 436rwhp with just that cam and bolt-ons and the dyno chart shows that it pulled clean all the way through to 6800 rpm where the tuner left off so the valvetrain appears to be working as intended.

As an update: I’m yanking the cam out today. I don’t want that whining POS in there. It’s time to move on from Comp Cams as things are just ridiculous at this point so I’m gonna go in another direction. Today is going to be a high of 19 degrees so this ought to be fun. I messaged Comp a few days ago, awaiting a response yet.

Since you've installed two of their cams and whining still persist, I would think the whining could be somewhere else in the engine and/or accessories. I've installed quite a few cams myself both with my old LT1 and now with the LS3, with no issues and mostly Comp cams with the LT1. I run Cam Motion LLSR with the LS3. Hopefully you find the culprit to all this aggravation.GL

Just pulled the car out of the garage for a couple of quick vids before I tear the motor down to the block for the third and hopefully final time. To me...the sound screams camshaft surface finish issue. And no the car does not have a Procharger despite sounding like it does haha. It’s a frigid 14 degrees here in PA today so the car is a bit cold. First video is outside of the car with the belts removed. Second video is inside the car.

It’s puzzling. Your first cam looked like mine on the surface, and my comp cam doesn’t whine. Your second cam is nicely polished, and you still have this whine sound. Looking forward to seeing what it looks like when you pull it out.

Did you pull the CAI off and see if it still whines?

Not a bad thought.....I know my car sings especially on a cold start. I can here the intake whistle while driving also when giving it part throttle. Didn't do it for me with the ls6 intake, only after switching to the msd and a 102 tb.

Thank you for the suggestion, I did give that a go but with no avail.

The videos don’t capture it fully but the whine is kind of like a mechanical whine that appears to be coming from inside the motor.

I’ll update the thread in the near future with more info. I’m currently communicating with Comp about the issue. I’ve had a couple of site sponsors reach out to me offering to help in different ways which is just amazing. Once things are figured out and settled I will provide a complete update.

Could this be an oil pump alignment issue? Or timing set (gear/chain) issue?

I removed and aligned the oil pump during the first install and checked the alignment during the second cam swap and it was good. I’m using the stock timing gears with a beefier chain, no clearance issues or anything, no rub marks anywhere. I also examined the cam bearings and they looked good as far as I could tell. I’m about 99.99% convinced it’s the cam as all of the cam whine videos on YouTube produce an identical sound to mine. Hopefully soon we will know for sure.

I think the only way to blame/eliminate the cam is to slip in a "known" good cam and see what happens.

Ok guys, I finally have an update and it’s a big one:

I removed COMP cam #2 from the motor since it whined just as the first one did. At this point there was no way in hell another COMP cam was going into my motor. In its place went a Cam Motion cam ground to the same specs as my prior COMP cams. I started the car up this past weekend with the new Cam Motion cam and NO MORE WHINE!!! Cam Motion FTW!! The cam and the rest of the valvetrain is as quiet as stock.

I cannot thank Cam Motion enough. Admist all of this hell they stepped in and offered to help me out and that they did. They are an excellent bunch of people and have earned my business for life. I have nothing but amazing things to say about them.

I also want to say thank you to WS6store. They offered to help as well. It goes to show that there are companies out there in this industry that care about and are there for us enthusiasts. I encourage everyone to consider both outfits for your LS needs.

In addition, the whining COMP cam was inspected and surface chatter was found. I have since contacted COMP cams and proven without a doubt that both of my COMP cams whined due to surface finish issues. For anyone wondering, the first faulty cam was manufactured in/around March 2017 utilizing their prior surface finish processes and the second cam was manufactured in November 2017 and utilized COMP’s new micro surface finish technology. COMP wants the cam back for their inspection before they decide what they will do. Considering all of the unnecessary time and money I have wrapped up into 3 cam swaps due to them, they better step up and make things right. If they don’t, I will make damn sure the world knows.

The writing is on the wall folks.

And here’s an idle clip of the new Cam Motion 228/232 .612/.603 111 LSA cam:

Interesting. Comp catches a lot of crap. My Comp cam, which was cut in late April, has no whine. I’m happy with mine.
So, in both cases here, all you changed was the camshaft, correct?
Same lifters, pushrods, etc?
Glad to hear you got the car straightened out!

After reading the aftermath to this, I'm going to call the cam motion cam "known good".

@Stealth, it's great you got to the bottom of it. Cam motion really is top notch both as a vendor and their product.

Comp cams is such a joke, I went round and round with them 20 years ago with problems and all I got from them was BS. I wouldn't touch anything they make. Another thing you'll find with them is they are SARCASTIC and CAN NEVER DO WRONG. I wonder if they are former cops?
