Build that 4.8 into a 5.1l and have some fun

cookseyb 12-21-2017 07:18 PM

Or a 5.7 to clean up the cylinder walls..

tech@WS6store 12-21-2017 08:25 PM

Cant build a 4.8 into a 5.7 without crank and rods.
5.1 is a 3.90X bore 4.8 crank n rods.

KCS 12-21-2017 08:27 PM

Sshhhhhhiiiiieeeeeeeeettttttt, dingle ball hone it and let her eat!!! :jest:

Both great ideas !!!!
Buddy says. “Hey those rings must have sealed great cuz four cylinders held water really well”.
My guess is after I stone hone these bitches by hand and dingle ball them, a new set of rings should have the proper end gaps for about 20 pounds of boost.
Prolly weld up the head deck notches, cut em’ thirty, lap the valves and assemble with new seals and blue springs
Got a 99’ LS1 Cam, pop an LS2 chain on and shim the ported oil pump
But I do kinda like the 3.900” bore with a 3.268” arm too. We shall see
It’s his engine. My time. Just keepin busy and outta trouble

tech@WS6store 12-21-2017 10:31 PM

Why even bother welding them? we have notched mls head gaskets.
I doubt that will clean up with a hone. Ive seen blocks that looked better that needed .020 or more.

The 327 was only impressive because it had a larger bore. Otherwise it would have been no better than a blue 289.

Although i prefer CID, i understand the allure of short strokes. I mean that's what got me through high school...lol
Im only building the 333 because i have a spare 4.8 crank and rods and a spare ls2 block that needed a .030 overbore to clean up a liner that looked better than yours. So kachow, 333.
Still a pretty odd combo but a great platform for testing a few new cams also. Win/win really

2.800" stroke versus 3.25"

That's a killer boost setup there......

You missed my point. If the 327 didnt have a larger bore with the short stroke it would be no better than a ford small block. It was a jab at ford also

AnotherWs6 12-22-2017 11:59 AM

I vote scrap metal.

tech@WS6store 12-22-2017 12:02 PM

Either way you do it, machine the rods for floating pins. Your friend will be happy they did.

Guess I didn’t understand “larger bore”. Than what ??
Both the 289 blue oval and the 327 Chevy had four inch bores
Just the stroke varied by .450”
No harm though.
