What's needed with the T-Rex v.2?

What all will I need with a T-Rex v.2 cam on my stock daily driver A4 with a yank 3500 2.4str?

I mean as far as pushrods, lifters, etc. Someone please help me to think of everything I'll need for reliable running.

SnakeKiller Jul 2, 2004 07:27 PM

For sure pushrods, dual springs, and a good tune. I also bought lifters, rockers, and a timing chain since the engine was apart. That cam is going to be on the large side for a 3500 stall.

You will need some taller gears too.

are taller gears a necessity?

2MuchRiceMakesMeSick Jul 2, 2004 09:34 PM

I would also like to know this, cause if I am going to replace the gears I might as well replace the rear end since so many 10 bolts break.

What will it drive like with stock 3.23 gears?

To bring the rpms up faster....Yes!

This so you'll get in the powerband quicker....

Cerebrex Jul 2, 2004 09:46 PM

but id still be able to drive with the 273s right?

SnakeKiller Jul 2, 2004 09:53 PM

I wouldn't call it a necessity. Taller gears would make it easier to drive. With a big converter the taller gears will help to get rid of some of the loose feeling. With a smaller converter the taller gears should make it easier to tune, it shouldn't want to surge as bad. I have a 4400 with 3.23's, it feels pretty loose and would drive better with some 3.73. My converter is big enough that I don't have the problem with it surging. If your running a smaller converter with that big of a cam, the taller gears would be more of a necessity.

Yeah, but it would'nt be optimal......Its reccomended with AT LEAST a 4000+ Stall and 4.10 gears....

It might be OK if your off a little on one of the requirements, but your off on both....

Like I said, you can do it, but it wouldnt be optimal...

BTW: IMO I think you should get gears first, If you cant get gears and TC at the same time...I wouldnt really worry too much on ur TC though...

Hope this helps:cheers:

ALSO, Feel free to ask any questions you have ;)

Your correct, it is optimal. I just noticed the 2.73's, that may be streching it with a 3500 converter.

You will go quicker with a smaller grind. That's a spin-it til you puke grind.

Dyno number might look good though. If you don't race, you might want it just for dyno days...

Cerebrex Jul 3, 2004 07:24 AM

trex thread

what grind would you suggest?

McRat Jul 3, 2004 07:37 AM

Since you are going to need good punch off 3000 up, and you drive this car everyday, and you probably aren't going to spin past 6,800, something near 224-228 112lsa.

You might want to call Thunder Racing and tell them what you want your car to do, and what your current mod's are. I'd be VERY suprised if they suggest the T-Rex grind for your needs. It's aimed at light cars with large stalls, gears, headers, that rev up to 7000+, that don't require perfect street manners.

Just what these guys said. I wouldn't even consider the T-Rex for my daily driver, but I do a lot of driving for work. My T/A is used for the weekends and some track use, so I'm going with the T-Rex.

For a daily driver, I'd go with either the TR 224 or TR 230, maybe the TSP 231/237, depending on how your personal tolerances are.
