Default Thoughts in metal flakes...

So i drained my oil bc I saw something i didn't like on the dip stick. Sparsely scattered flakes...
from 2500+ oil is like 70psi. No knocks, nada! I'm thinking maybe timing chain???? Bottom end has 176k. 80k were highway miles from my military enlistment days... At 105k i did ls6 top end bc pushrod broke. Lately been fighting change of weather in FL with o2/maf issues and unplugged maf til got new one with new o2s running a week on speed density. But car ran fine.
But no noisy lifters or knocks. I just did back to back flush and went from valvaline 5-30 full syn to cheap stp syn new filter, to 10-30std new filter stp oil stabilizer zinc additive and will run that for couple days and then back to mobile 1 synthetic. But not sure if should try thicker 10-30 or stay with 5-30 high mileage full syn? Was really hoping to get 200k from factory 98 shortblock :/
Oil pressure never goes below 45!!! Wtf????

What color are they, are they magnetic, start thinking about pulling the pan, the rod caps, main caps or cam bearings.

Well, its magnetic, so i don't think bearings... Like stated, oil pressure is phenomenal! Wot is almost 80psi. So I'm thinking valve train parts... I am cutting filter open tomorrow at work and after 20-50 miles with the 10-30 std oil, cutting that filter open and putting 10-30syn mobile 1. Its my dd but not. I have other vehicles to drive, but financially, wasn't ready for cam upgrade

best guess is something you did while you are in there last time. one of those parts or one of the parts that touches or plays off of them.

metallic debris has a way of making its rounds through the oil system quickly turning an engine to scrap. I would pull it apart (intake/head area for you I guess) and inspect everything I have done since last time immediately.

I don’t know G, he said in first post that everything is quiet. I feel that an OEM rocker bearing going south, would make some noise.
To me...if I’m finding metal on my dipstick...which is such a small, tiny area, I have to believe that the engine is full of metal. At this point it’s coming out, and coming apart. But then again, the flakes are magnetic, with no engine noise?
Do you have any pics of metal flakes OP?

I had metal specks in my oil for a very long time....75k miles, was number 7 piston and rings. Every time I checked the dip stick there would be a very small amount on the stick. The drain plug magnet always had a fine metallic debris on it at every 5k oil change. @ 135k the engine started loosing power and the piston went out the exhaust system to visit the muffler. BUT I always had a knock from number 7 cylinder even hot. I believe it was slowly shedding metal all that time.

Another place you can get it from is lifters and cam, takes a long time but they can eventually wear down. Seen it a few times. Also seen a bunch that had worn upper push rod-rocker that shed metal from not getting enough oil up to the top end from partially blocked lifters. Surprisingly they weren't loud sounding.

I've switched over to diesel rated oil 10-30 Chevron Delo and 5-40 chevron Delo have found the engines run better, are quieter and stay much cleaner looking. I also have very little lifter noise compared to using the regular gas engine oils. I also picked up some fuel mileage highway driving. My WS6 has 160k and Jeep has 250k both run like new. My v6 Camaro just turned 99k so time will tell. I also use low restriction Purolator Proline oil filters. I tried a bunch of filters and these are well built and FLOW.

Well, I'm starting to think cam retainer plate, sprocket... Only other thing might be considering metal.. And more metal than I'd ever want to find in my oil. Haven't driven car in 2 weeks now bc of flakes til I can tear the front cover off. But I hastily thought oil pump, but again, 55-60 psi on cold start like has been for last 75k miles since ls6/2 top end swap and 70-80psi on wot at 6800rpms. So really, just sprocket, chain or retainer has to be culprit!
