Wifes C5 cam and 243's We have a 99 c5 my wife daily drives and loves taking it to the drag strip. Im planing to keep the stock converter and do a small cam and milled 243's. Im thinking something like the gm hot cam will have a nice sound and use ls6 springs so durability will not suffer. Basically looking for a torque cam that goes from idle to 6000 rpm. Im open to a different cam as long as durability is still there. Im planning to mill a set of 243's. How much can i mill on a small cam without issues? The only current mods are ls6 intake, underdrive pulley, mufflers and tune. cam specs 219/228 .525"/.525" 112 LSA Thanks for your help. |
I would def consider throwing in converter. A 3200 stall is a great DD stall even though i would do 3600 as a minimum. Pair that 3200 stall with a good ol 224/224 cam.. |
1 vote against the GM Hot cam. I'm not impressed with that cam at all. Loses too much bottom end torque. I agree with TXZ28-go with a 220, or 224 cam with more lift than the Hot Cam. |
Gotta find out what the wife will tolerate being it is a daily. A 216/220 on .525/.532 on a 114 won’t run on LS6 springs from what I’ve read but a good single spring should be absolutely AOK. Your most likely going to want to install a stall in the car just to help the cam get into its powerband quicker. Keeping the redline at 6k rpm definitely keeps you with the smaller cam. As for milling the heads, your looking at this wrong. Raising the compression literally only gets you a couple of ponies. The real power is getting them ported. While I don’t know what your budget is, heads more times than not will net you 30-40 hp with little to no drivability pitfalls that you get with bigger cams. |

If you're going to keep the stock torque converter, then you need to keep low end torque robust or it will be a pooch off the line. Something like a 220/222 .600"/.600 on a 112LSA +4 advance. That will pull hard out of the hole and still have decent power to 6400 rpm. |

There are alot better Cams out there than the GM Cam you are talking about. Check out Crane or Comp Cams. You'll probably get a better price too than one from GM. |
Why mill the heads? |
I’d Mill them heads .020” and pop some blue springs on them get the GT2-3 stick, LS2 chain, 7.4” push rods and port and shim the oil pump wont sound nasty but will run and drive well. Even better once you tune it. If you decide to put a converter in which is a great suggestion BTW. Then 220-224 becomes the minimum you’ll wanna run |

I have a 98 C5 and I went with the 224r cam with a 112lsa, beehive springs and hardened pushrods, then put on some ported 243 heads and exhaust, drivability was great for about 1000 miles till my trans took a dump then i just went ahead and put a converter in it. |

Yep, I've been through the same thing with the 4l60 on my ride. Earlier this year i replaced it with a 4l80. Thats the main reason i am wanting to do a small cam and not rev more than 6000. |
C5 is a pretty light car, with a stock stall auto I would think a 218/226 cam with up to .600 lift on 114 would be great as a daily/ occasional strip car. I run PAC 1218 springs as my 218/226 had .595 max lift. Using a Cam Motion cam this combo has a very quiet valvetrain and is very smooth. Shouldn't be as hard on the auto as some other cams I would think. |

WS6 Store Hot cam would be a good choice. |
