LQ4 Build, custom cam spec explained Hey all, I'm working my way through my lq4 build and just got the custom cam spec's back from the shop on what their cam guy wants to put in it. The numbers are like nothing I've seen in similar builds posted on here and wanted to get input from the community. This is for an lq4 4l80e in a third gen camaro, 11:1, mahle pistons, eagle rods, .030 over with stock 243 heads, .660 manely spring kit & trunnion upgrade, ls6 intake, 1 3/4" headers. Full trim weekend fun street car is what I'm going after. comp cam 223/242 duration .634/.615 lift 112 lsa Question is: what can i expect out of this cam? power down low? torquey? Obviously I don't know too much on what these mean but want to make sure I'm getting what I want. (Yes the shop assured me this is a good low end cam for street use) but the lift and duration split seems crazy? or not? help! |
It'll run like crap. Too much duration on the exhaust. A single pattern would even be better than that. Find you a new cam guy. |
What Tusky said! Cathedrals do not need even close to that much exhaust duration! That cam MIGHT work in a supercharged rectangular port engine like an LSA or LS9, but NOT in a NA cathedral. Call Cam Motion or TSP for a GOOD cam spec. OR call Pat Guerra and he will spec one for a small fee for someone else to grind, but it WILL be a good cam! P.S. - Tell us who spec'd the cam so we can all avoid him like the plague. |
well that's not good news... what would be the disadvantage of the large exhaust duration performance-wise? Cam was already cut by comp |
I'd also be worried about the 634 lift, that's a little much for stock rockers |
That looks like a nitrous cam. For ALOT of nitrous. I'd go looking for other cam recommendations. Might want to consider this one. http://www.ws6project.com/user_stor/...oducts_id=8746 |
Any other cam-knowledgeable guys care to comment? General consensus is that it’s not a good spec. |
If you want cam knowledge go to the sources I named above. They won't steer you wrong. WHO spec'd the cam Comp ground for you? |
Thanks G Atsma! Will look into it. And i'd rather not say just in case I have the #'s wrong, don't want to tarnish someones rep. I will keep the thread updated as more info/numbers come along. Really just wanted to make sure this cam would have good street manners and a decent idle. Was hoping to use a 3000 or 3200 stall and have a decent but not overly excessive lope at idle and good midrange power. From what I can tell, a 223 intake duration with high lift should do that? |

As stated ...exhaust duration too large and in my opinion both intake and exhaust lifts are too high for unported 243's. Stressed valve train for very little gain if any over a properly spec'd cam for a weekend car ;) |
Dorman ls2? I have a 6.0 lq4 with a 231\239 tsp cam lt headers under drive pulley k&n 243 heads but i wanna use a dorman ls2 intake but i dont know what injectors i need for that intake, ls1 or ls2? |
Internet build me race car. |
aside from the cam spec, I'm planning on running LS7 lifters in this setup. Should this be sufficient or would it be worth stepping up to johnson 2110's? |
That's a bit of an odd duck depending on how much advance is ground in (if any). 0 I/O, 43 I/C, 53 E/O, and 9 E/C. Mostly the exhaust closing point. |
anyone else on lifter selection for this build? |
Depends on the cam. Which hopefully, won't be the one with those specs up there. ;) But LS7 ones are good for most typical street-ish builds. Consider this one here. http://www.ws6project.com/user_stor/...oducts_id=8542 Let us know when you pick one out. |
you sure the 223 duration isn't actually a 232? that would make a lot more sense. |

Looks like a 12856 intake lobe and 13162 exhaust lobe. Personally, I'd run and see what happens. Cams with a split that big have made huge power. Not the best, but it'll likely work fine. |
