mobile 1 is group 4 PAOs and group 5 esters and polyglycols
and synthetics definitely come from fossil fuels.
group 4 bases are steam cracked fractions of natural gas.
group 5 bases are various ethylenes and propylene which are synthesized from.....natural gas
there really isnt anything that doesnt come from fossil fuel in one way or another.

Mobile 1 does NOT use a pure PAO class IV base stock. It used to, but doesn't any longer. There's more profit from using dino oil and calling it a synthetic. A couple of years ago I found some M1 motorcycle oil from Japan that appeared to be a true synthetic.
Mixing in a little PAO with your dino oil also does not make it a synthetic. If that were true, you could use 4qts of castrol and 1 qt of Redline, and call it 5 qts of synthetic.
That doesn't mean M1 is a bad oil. By all accounts it seems to be just fine for most applications. But if you bought it thinking it's a true synthetic, you were tricked.
