Help 5.3 whine video attachéd

Motor was fine when I pulled it from truck a year ago. Just started it for the first time today. No drive belts are attached. No knocking or ticking but the whine when I turn it off Is terrible

G Atsma 12-22-2018 08:46 PM

It whines AFTER you shut it off??

Ls7colorado 12-22-2018 09:24 PM

where is that video? starter still engaged?

Kinda sounded like a massive vacuum leak, mainly say that because it went away when you opened the throttle a hair.

but when you cut the engine off it sounded like the flywheel or something rubbing.

I would start looking for vacuum leaks first

Ok don’t flame me on this I’m not a mechanic but this is what I did carb is a ultra 650 small ports are capped off and big one which is supposed to go to brake booster is capped since I don’t have a brake booster. Intake is a Holley no one ports on that. Pvc are open on both valve covers. I don’t know what other vacuum lines there are? Also I removed the tranny and clutch completly started it and Noise remains the same everyone I showed the video too also said driveline which I can now rule out. A local shop said cam bearing on its way out again just looking at video. Also oil pressure is 50-60psi at high idle

Internal supercharger bearings are shot.

That video made me laugh.

Wonder if the crank pulley is rubbing on something?

How's oil psi?

Ryan haynes 12-23-2018 01:47 PM

Pullley has clearance oil pressure is good flywheelhas clearance in the back

I think it sounds kinda cool. lol Have you tried running it with the acc belt off? How about with the air filter on?
Reminds me of the old school gear drive timing sets but I don’t believe anyone is making those for the newer engines.

Ryan haynes 12-23-2018 03:55 PM

There is no belt on I have this thing fully stripped down no clutch no acc so it has to be a cam bearing or something metal to metal inside the motor which is disappointing to say the least I personally pulled this motor I drove the truck home so I know the motor was good. I’m not sure how a cam bearing goes bad while sitting on a engine stand

Ls7colorado 12-24-2018 07:16 AM

Doesn’t sound like any metal sound I’ve ever heard , take some brake cleaner and spray around the intake to see if any of the ports are leaking.

Ryan haynes 12-24-2018 10:32 AM

I checked the intake for leaks no change when I sprayed carb cleaner. I realized that the pcv valve wasn’t plumbed correct which got me real excited since I heard a couple videos that sounded similar. Well this morning I fixed that and no change so I pulled the motor and am now looking for a replacement. If I can find a no acc motor for 6-700 it’s not even worth me opening this up since machine shop bills will be much higher and I have no need to make more than 300hp since it’s in a scout 80 and anything over 65mph is boredline deadly.

If it’s eating a bearing, or lifter, the oil filter will be full of debris. Take the filter off, and cut it open using an oil filter cutting tool. At least you’ll know what happened, instead of wondering for the rest of your life...

Ryan haynes 12-24-2018 12:35 PM

Cut it open nothing crazy inside

Ls7colorado 12-24-2018 08:39 PM

Your sure the starter gear is retracting back and not still spinning on the flywheel?

00pooterSS 12-26-2018 12:20 PM

Ryan haynes 12-26-2018 04:11 PM

Yes fully retracted

Ryan haynes 12-26-2018 04:14 PM

Another person said that there is a magnet at the end of cam sensor it could have detached and get stuck on something inside motor ?

I couldn't help it it was the first thing I thought of lol

OP i'd inspect the flex plate closely for anything that may have been rubbing on it, and like others I suspect it may be rubbing on part of the starter whether it's the bendix or maybe the flexplate hitting the nose cone of the starter and rubbing on it. Does the starter have any shims? If so maybe one of those moved over and is hitting the plate.

I've never heard of the cam sensor coming apart and rubbing, it's possible though I guess. But it likely wouldn't run. Hard to say some vehicles will run without a cam sensor signal and some won't.
