Default Oil pressure relief valve spring

Have a Melling 10296 and need to swap out the pressure spring without removing the pump.

Can it be changed by dropping just the oil pan? Really don't want to pull the water pump/timing chain cover again and can't remember if it's accessible when I had it off. Thanks.

I just looked at a pic of one like yours, and it LOOKS like you might be able to by dropping the pan. The plug for the relief valve faces down, but not sure of the tool needed to access it. Good luck!

I’d be surprised if you pull this off. Those Allen plugs that hold the spring in are installed with thread locker and are an absolute burger to remove. Often times the head will strip out on it unless you heat it to break the loctite loose. I’d pull the pump personally.
Let us know how this goes

Why are you wanting to change out the spring? Are you looking to swap out the high pressure spring for the stock spring? You should be able to accomplish this if careful as Che70velle stated. Use a "good" quality hex wrench and it would probably be in your best interest to heat the area of the hex plug before removal to "loosen" the loctite on the plug

I recommend someone video the attemp as you try to lower the oil pan and stick a torch in there to heat the bolt. Things like that are why YouTube was invented.

Not going in there with a torch

Oil pressure is reading 80+ psi at wot. Want to try to swap out the red spring for the blue and see if it helps.

Thanks for the replies,
Going to give it a shot and will update.

LOL...a cheap Harbor Freight heat gun ($11.99) will work to loosen the loctite. No torch needed.

Before going to all that trouble, what weight oil are you currently using? Are you trying to lower the pressure? Thinner oil maybe??
