Cam recommendation for TEA S2.5 LS6 heads

I ordered some TEA S2.5 LS6 heads last week, and I am looking for some input on a cam to run with them. I currently have 2 cams in my arsenal to choose from, but would be willing to sell them if something else would make a significant difference. My car is probably 90% street/10% strip, so idle quality and drivability are more important to me than absolute max power. That being said, I would like to hit 450 RWHP if possible on stock displacement. The cams I already have are:

1.) TR 224/224 .563"/.563" 112 LSA.

2.) FMS F11 228/230 .577"/.596" 112 LSA.

Which cam would you run and why? Or would you run something else?

The car made 420 RWHP, 400 RWTQ with the TR cam and JPR S2 heads. Made 408,390 with the FMS cam. Of the two cams, I actually like the TR cam better, but realize the FMS cam will probably work better with the TEA heads.

go g5x3 from LG motorsports or go FM 13 or one of TSP new cams. The G5x3 is huge, but everyone says the driveability is absolutely great no problems at all even for a daily driver! If you run that cam you will be way over 450 rwhp probibly 470-480 with those heads as long as you have all the right boltons which it looks like you do by your sig.

Thanks for the response. No doubt I could make awesome power with either of those two cams, but I wonder if I can hit my goal (450) with a smaller cam? I have my doubts about driveability and idle quality of those two cams, despite what I have read on the board. Plus, I only have 3.73 gears in the stock 10 bolt rear. :eek2: (12 bolt and 4.10s will be purchased when finances recover from the heads.) My car is mainly street driven, so I want alot of low end torque and area under the curve to have a fast, fun street car. Sacrificing low end power for a few peak HP makes no sense in a street car, IMO.

Id say maby just change the heads. A good set of heads will really wake up your combo. The only thing worse than a stock head is a hacked up set. Ive have seen many posts of jpr customers independently flowing there heads and being very disapointed. The TEA heads are an excellent choice and I think you will really see a large gain. If you are going to change your cam and dont want to go too big i would go with the g5-x2. It has been one of the most consistant performing cams out there.

What do they flow? Need somewhat of a flow base to determine a camshaft.

Maybe try TSP new torquer cam which is a 233/233 which seems big, but they say it makes lots of low end torque and it still has a great top end. Call TSP they have one of the best customer service even by e mail.

I would get the FMS cam on a 113 or 114 if idle quality is real important to you. A buddie of mine had a FM11 on a 113 lsa with some advance and it idled great, and made good power. Another friend has a FM11 on a 114 with some other stuff going in too, but I haven't heard his run yet. :secret:

I appreciate everyone's input...I'm still weighing my options.

TEA is going to flow the JPR heads for me, so we will find out how good or bad they really are.

The flow numbers for the TEA stage 2.5 LS6 heads are listed on their website...I don't recall right off hand. I think Verbs posted at one time what they flow with the LSX intake attached- those would be useful numbers in my case...I am having TEA port and port match my LSX intake to the heads. I also have the 90mm TB, so hopefully I won't be very restricted by my intake setup.

Has anybody used Ed Curtis or one of the other custom cam speccing services yet? I am considering sending him all my data and seeing what he comes up with. I have heard of a few cases where TEA/FMS combos have not made the power people expected, and it is making me a little nervous.

From TEA's website, here are the flow numbers for their LS6 stage 2.5 heads:

Lift Intake Exhaust(with pipe)
.100 69.7 56.7
.200 138.6 117.9
.300 201.2 165.1
.400 254.0 215.1
.500 291.7 253.3
.550 309.0 262.3
.600 318.7 267.6

Well that was in person, now he won't return P.M's and I have no tracking #.

That's very disturbing...what were your flow numbers and dyno numbers?

I would love to see a F13 with the heads. The Futral cams seems to like TEA heads :burn:

ONEBADWS6 07-19-2004 11:29 AM

I think my G5X4 is more than enough cam.

What are the specs on that cam, do you know? I lost power going from the TR 224 cam to the F11, maybe you would make more power with a smaller cam....dunno...I know I will be pissed if I only gain 10 HP from the TEA heads. I'm at 408 RWHP now.

What did u pick up with the LSX/90 on the old setup V the LS6 ported TB?

Are you talking to me or the other guy, JS?

Anyway, I picked up 13 HP and 2 TQ with the LSX and 90mm TB.

But then I lost 12 HP and 10 TQ when I put in the F11 cam. So that put me right back where I started in terms of HP, and 8 ft/lbs lower in torque.

I picked up 10rwhp, as for the cam specs I have no idea, thats how Lou does things.

JS 07-19-2004 01:26 PM

Wow am I ready this correctly!!!
One of u picked up 13RW and the other 10RW from the LSX/90 VS a LS6/PTB

Bad,IMO your numbers are pretty good for a S2/TR224 car...
I think I wouldve left well enough alone.

I love the TR Cams, they just seem to make great power in every application.I wish I had one in my car,but I'm leaving the 224-580 113+2 alone as I'm afraid the car might lose power by changing cams as bigger isnt always better.

You may be right, JS....maybe I should have left my setup alone. I certainly wish I had left the TR cam in the car, but hopefully the FMS cam will work better with the TEA heads?? I hope so.

I just remember two or three years ago when the TR cams first came out that there were at least a couple people who made 450 RWHP with the TR 224 cam and GTP heads. I figure with advances in LS1 head porting, plus new bolt-ons not available then (LSX intake, 90mm TB, EWP), 450 ought to be a piece of cake. But maybe that's not the case.
