2002 stock Z06 springs - max lift?
I have a 212/218 cam with .527 lift on the
exhaust side using the stock 1.7 rockers. I am starting a home porting project of a 2002 LS6
set of heads with springs and valves. I know the
springs see .551 lift with the stock '02 Z06
cam. I am thinking if changing to 1.8 Crane
rockers which I have from another project. This
would lead to .558 lift with my cam. Can the Z06
springs handle this extra lift, .007"??
Thanks,
Gert g.bruning@philips.com

That lift is kind of pushing it. I would go with the new double springs, spend the money and dont look back, i think there rev.. But to get a good solid answer, give someone like a sponser a call, like joe prince that has knowledge with the springs and pretty much everything else.

Springs will be FINE for a fact. I have used 01 and 02 LS6 springs on many many motors. Put them on they are great I have yet to see a failure.

Re: 2002 stock Z06 springs - max lift?
Thanks guys. I was thinking the same thing.
Here is a little twist on this thread:
This picture is directly off the GM performance parts page -
https://www.spoperformanceparts.com/
This is the "Grand Cup cam" or whatever they are calling it. It has .570 lift on both lobes. Although it does use the lighter LS6 valves, it has big duration and lift. The part number it lists for the spring needed is P/N 125565313, which happens to be the 02 LS6 spring!
<img src="http://www.z71.net/gcup.gif" alt=" - " />
Now what does everyone think?
I've not seen any posts of anyone breaking an 02 LS6 spring. I have seen a couple of posts where 918s have broken lately (not as many as last spring). With a cam of smaller base circle using stock heads and valves, and stock length pushrods, will it really achieve the full .560 lift anyway?

Re: 2002 stock Z06 springs - max lift?
Having lighter valves means much more than some are giving credit for. These springs can handle the lift and ramps that are being suggested, but they have a low seat pressure. This will cause valvetrain instability and valve float at upper rpms without lightweight components. That is why the previously posted radical cam parts list said lightweight valves were manditory.
IMO the smaller cams could get away with these springs w/o using light valves, but only because of tamer ramps, lower lifts, and lower rpm ranges.

Re: 2002 stock Z06 springs - max lift?
IMO, no, they wont.
People think cause there on the vette with the cam at .550 lift or something, they can handle that lift, but people forget one imporant fact, the z06 has lightweight sodium filled valves which puts less stress on the springs.
Now if you have lightweight aftermarket valves i can see no problem with the .53x-54x lift on a cam since the z06 cam has pretty fast ramprates then everyone might think, as so im told from joe prince, but to try the 56x lift would be pushing it....

Re: 2002 stock Z06 springs - max lift?
Thanks for a good discussion on the '02LS6 springs.
My original question assumed the use of the '02LS6
stock valves which I have. Based on the info from
BigTex from GM going to about .558" of lift with the
lightweight valves will be okay,
Gert
