Default Did I get a defective valve spring micrometer? (pics)

This is the micrometer I bought from Summit

This is the micrometer I recieved (2 pics). Looking at this picture, how am I supposed to accurately measure the install height, when the 0 on the dial never matches up to a horizontal line????

Thanks for the picture, but if you look at the first picture of my original post, what is that measurement showing? 1.00 inches? (Notice the zero is halfway between the 0 and the 1).

Another question, shouldn't the retainer fit inside the lip on the top of the micrometer?

I think I am understanding this a bit more. I just wish it was more intuitive, and that when the tool was fully closed, the main vertical line --- lined up to the zero on the dial. It looks as if it is lining up to the 45 on the dial. I just have to do the math.

But back to my second question... I believe the retainer should fit inside the lip of the micrometer correct?

That spring mic. measures as low as 1.6" and up to 2.0" and there is nothing wrong with it, same one I have in fact. Good to see someone doing this the right way.

One full barrel turn = .100".
It reads in .005" increments.
Example: If the barrel (horizontal part) was on the "50" and it was between the "7" and the "8" on the verticle part of Mic, that would be 1.750".

You want to measure the spring height from the top of the hardened spring seat to the bottom of the retainer so you are measuring spring height only. So that Pic with the retainer sitting in it is correct.

Actually, on my micrometer the measurement would be (1.750 - .045 = 1.705). See my post above.

You say "sitting in it". The retainer is actually sitting on top of the micrometer, not in it (its not resting on the inner lip).

You know all this would have been solved if the guys at Comp Cam sent an instruction sheet with their tool. This is no screwdriver. Does anyone have pictures of the tool in use?

I would send it back. If you need to use it before you send it back measure it with a dial caliper to see how much it is off.
For those not understanding what's wrong with it. Look at his first pic and see how the part that turns (When at 0) lines up with number one's line. Now In his pics of the one he got when the part that turns is at zero its half way between 0 and 1. So is it at zero or 1 ?

Well it looks like the tool is accurate as long as I deduct .045 from the measurement. Here the tool is reading 2.00 inches when the deduction of .045 is taken (due to the tool misalignment):

Here is a piece of paper with two marks and a ruler with the micrometer length transcribed. It looks very close to 2.00 inches.

big block retainers cover the whole top...some small block retainers go in the lower groove but most fit up top. you just add the height of the groove. and yes needs to be recalibrated....ie its fuggered up.

Well I just sent it back to Summit. Not only do I believe the micrometer was screwed up, I saw a similar one online for $20 cheaper.

How much did you pay for Summits peice? Are you referring to the peice that thunder sells? Doesn't that go for $70?

nah, my bad. $86.69.

damn dude, the summit peice was only 62.xx? where'd you find a micrometer for $40 bucks?

Sorry, I didn't notice it was .045 off like that, yeah it's messed up and I would of sent it back to. I think I picked mine up for $49 and it's the Comp cam one.

No, I didn't mean inside the Mic., I meant on top of it like you showed in the Pic. Just pretend the Mic is your valve spring...

I also looked at mine again and it measures 1.6-2.2" unlike what I said above, my bad.

TTT Quick question guys...

OK, so if I want 1.71" spring height, I would set the tool to 1.71"
then
you put the seats in, put the tool on top, put the retainer in...

Do i put the rocker arm on too? Then rotate the tool to see how much I need to shim?
