FM13 or FM14?

I'm currently running a TR224 cam and I'm ready to go bigger! I have Absolute 5.3's milled .005 with 2.02/1.575 valves. Will the FM14 clear everything on a 112 +4? How much low end will the 14 give up to the 13? Midrange? Peak? Also running stock 3.42's for now if that matter in the comparison of the two. I know the 13 will peak about 6300, how about the 14? Thanks in advance!

John

I've had a few cams in my car ;) and have to say.. without a doubt you need a F13 112 +2. IMO that cam can't be beat. I'm going to try a couple of other donkey dick cams in the next two weeks or so, but so far.. NOTHING has impressed me like the F13 112+2 has. Don't get a +4, it will peak too early and loose out on a good peak number, hell.. I'd almost get it on a 112 with no advance in it if you weren't afraid to shift at 6700 or so.

I've just ordered a FM13 on a 112lsa, can you tell me what the 112 +2 is and how i can find out what my cam is.

The 112+2 means the cam is on a 112LSA w/2 degrees of advance ground in. I believe all of futrals cams that are off the shelf are +4. That just means that the cam is advanced 4 degrees rather than 2.......thus, the cam will peak at a lower rpm then if you had it at +2.

For example

112+4 peaks @ 6300rpms
112+2 peaks @ 6500rpms
112+0 peaks @ 6700rpms
(this is just for arguments sake)

Scott,
Your killing me with the Donkey Dick Cams!!!! :D How much difference would there be in the +2 and +4 at peak in regards to HP and RPM. You think the 13 would be a better all around cam for my car?

rufretic 12-08-2004 08:45 PM

I went through the same choice. It was hard to make but Allan helped me out. Its hard because the f14 is new and doest have as many examples out there. Lots of people have proven the f13. I told Allan everything I have and plan to do and we came to a decision. He told me if my biggest concern was performance then I would be happy with the f14. So I trusted him and am going to give the f14 on a 112 a try. He sounded pretty confident I would hit my goals with this cam. My goals are to be in the 11s and over 400hp. Theres never any guarantee so I guess I'll have to wait till I get it in there before I can give you a valid opinion. I can't wait.
Good luck with your choice,
Lou

I've got an adjustable timing set on the way and I'm going to do some testing with different ICL's on cams.. but the way I see it is that no matter what you do or what cam you go with (to a certain point) the peak torque will be at approx 4800rpm.. I'm fairly confident that ICL or LSA doesn't effect this too much, it is due to the intake and head intake runner length. The higher ICL will move the torque curve up in the RPM range further.. making a higher HP peak number and greater average HP.

This F15 cam that I have and the one that was in Jlaw's car completely suck. And I'm damn sure that it is because of the 107ICL on them. I'm going to retard this F15 I have by 4 degrees and I bet there is around a 15 to 20rwhp difference at peak and more average HP above 4500rpm than it had at 107ICL. Time and experimentation will tell.. :judge:

I'd be interested to see what kind of results you get w/the retard on the RJ cam. If the ICL was say 111 instead of 107, you're thinkin the cam will perform much better? Hmm. Keep us posted, Allan may have to adjust his grind a little if you hit a home run ;)

Do you have any plans to run the F14 any time soon? Why do you think the -13 still outperforms it? I am still considering both myself, and you're the man w/the cams, would like to hear your input.

Procircuit155 12-08-2004 09:05 PM

I'll have to ask alan if the cam had any advance ground in, he told me to set my rev limiter at 6800. If my cam is a +4 can I change that with my adjustable timing chain?

I'm sure that the ICL being 107 on the RJ cam was so that it would fit with stock heads and no flycutting, it was a compromise. I know that retarding the cam will make a higher peak HP number, how much higher will come out in the next couple of weeks. The cams I'll be trying in the next few weeks will be
1. F15 on 107 ICL
2. F15 retarded 2*
3. F15 retarded 4*
4. TSP MS3
5. PRC "unamed donkey dick cam"
6. Thunder Racing Trex if they will give me sample to evaluate :)
All of these will be on a set of 6,000 mile stock 241 heads.

With an adj. timing chain, you can advance/retard the cam. :)

John02SS 12-08-2004 09:14 PM

looking forward to seeing the stock head results with the different combo's. Hell, I'll buy the 13 and run it till more of the 14 results come out. Cam swaps are cake now that I dont' have to do springs! :D May need some tuning help with the mini donkey dick cams!

cyphur 12-08-2004 09:21 PM

Gomer, why do you say the -13 is still the better choice over the 14? Not enough results out w/the 14 yet to be confident in it, or just not impressed with it? I've seen a couple strong showings, and some that weren't wholly impressive. It seems its hit or miss.

i'm going with the f-13

pdd 12-08-2004 09:52 PM

im going with the fm14 112lsa. should be here in a few days :)

You had the 11 didn't ya? How is the P/V clearence with the FM14 and the shaved AFR's gonna be. Be interesting after you clay them. I'll just have to take Allens word on mine as I'm not pulling the heads.

gomer did you have to flycut your pistons to run 5.3 heads and the f15 cam?

John02SS 12-08-2004 10:12 PM

ppd, I thought you would need too but wasn't sure. Gonna be a wicked setup man!

Gomer has cut the intake reliefs on the pistons for the 15, but I think he has had cut pistons for awhile though.

Black02SS 12-08-2004 10:13 PM

I believe he cut the intake side and not the exhaust.
