Default whats this cam change worth? (interesting "?" for you cam "guru's")

present cam: an old ARE grind 226/234 112lsa .554/.575

new cam im considering: an old MMS grind: 229/229 575/575 114

other mods are in the sig....

Although i would be going to a single pattern, SINCE the MMS cam is on a 114 wouldn't this cam like the bottle more or atleast just as much as the ARE cam?
PLUS since theres added intake duration and lift, wouldnt this make up for the lack of a split? help me out guys i need to know if this is worth it, and if so roughly whats it worth?

Thanks

btw, the car made 404rwhp N/A AND 540hp, 620 tq on the jug (125 shot) so the current cam likes the bottle i guess, will this MMS cam like it just as much?
and I also heard you need to SPIN the 229 to get some power, are these 978's ok to use?

Stick with the cam that you have. A standard split cam will work better with Nitrous. Nitrous likes the higher exhaust duration.

dending on the size of the shot both cams would work well. yes n2o likes a standard split and less overlap but with a sub 200 > * its not that big of a deal.

I dont know what lobes there on, i CAN tell you its an OOOOOOLD ARE cam, and the MMS 229 is pretty old too. the heads after getting refreshed by nick at ARE (they had 2.08's in them at first) flow the following: as per nick:

INTAKE EXHAUST LIFT

141 107 200
201 143 300
229 159 350
249 174 400
267 187 450
282 199 500
290 207 550
299 213 600

and he added:

"The heads were cut about .030 in total but the valve work has been done a few times now so we probalbly picked up about .010. "

what type of gains are you looking for? so are 2.08's or 2.05's in there? both cams being so old i'd look for something more current. new lobes and designs will better maximize your setup. being milled will limited some of the choices though.

they have 2.05's in them now....... its just that i can get the cam for cheap,($100) and i was looking at something that would act a lil better on the motor: WITHOUT sacrificing how it acts on the bottle - and i figured it being on a 114 would make up for the fact that its not a split- because even though my current cam is a split- am i not loosing a lil something' being that its on a 112 and not a 114?

btw thanks for all the input

well assuming a 4* advance ground in on both cams i come up with:

ARE:
IVO = 5
IVC = 41
EVO = 53
EVC = 1

6* overlap @.050

MMS
IVO = 4.5
IVC = 44.5
EVO = 52.5
EVC = -3.5

1* overlap @ .050

i'd personally look elsewhere if your going to do a cam swap.

I have seen Terrys car run 10.80 with the MMS 229 cam, and it idled and ran smoother then my 224 cam.

I have the MMS 229/229 and I love it. With the combo in my sig and good weather I think it was good for 120+ mph trap speeds. Never got the chance, I missed a shift and toasted my heads. To top it off, when I sent them back to TEA, DHL lost them BTW the dyno numbers in the sig were without a ported TB and thru a stock WS.6 exhaust without a cut out and a Volant intake.

I have this cam with stock heads. I bought it used and run it with 918 springs.

The cam card says .578" lift, 230@.050", 281@.006" with 111 ICL.

Its supposed to be a good nitrous cam. Ive done searches and people have had good luck on spray with this cam. Hard to say if it would be any better than your current cam.

It does have a pretty smooth idle for its size. Has a steady lumpy idle. Very drivable too. It will lug 6th gear at 1k. The cam is weird. It comes alive around 2500rpms then has a dead spot around 3k then gets stronger again after 3500rpms. Feels like it makes peak torque around 5k. Its likes to rev but runs better than I thought it would with the stock rev limiter. I saw a dyno of this cam. It made peak power at 6400 and stayed close to the peak till 6800 and then started to drop off. Hope this helps.

For $100 its a bargain. It would be a great deal for someone doesnt already have a cam. My favorite thing about the cam is that its a lil more agressive than the typical tr224 cam and doesnt require double springs. I got 20k miles out of the 918's with no problems.

Futral Motorsports are makin similar cams that work even better. The MMS229 is an old cam like the B1's and T1's. They work good but the new grinds are better but you can find the old cams used pretty cheap.

Plus Patriot are making some good double springs that are inexpensive. When I installed this cam, double springs werent available that didnt require machining of the heads. You couldnt run over .600" lift without takn the heads off. pita

yes ive seen the 224/230 and 232/236 they make.. id definetly want the f9, the bigger version but just think that might be too much for my 3000 stall, and the smaller one prolly just wouldn't be enuff to quench my thirst... so im still learning and deciding lol
