Just thought I'd let everyone know....

I re-used the stock head bolts on my head swap to see if they really can be re-used since no one has the balls to do it and torqued them to 70' lbs. So far I have well over 500 miles on the head swap and have had 0 problems with anything! So for those of you who say not to re-use the old head bolts listen and learn!!! However.... I would never re-torque with the old bolts using torque to yeild or they WILL break! If 70' lbs is good enough for an ARP head bolt than it's good enough for a stocker! I'm also putting over 400 to the wheels an running 10.9 CR.

Lots of people have done it with no problems. There is always that 1 chance though.

Good luck in the future....

Cstick Mar 12, 2005 07:43 PM

A whole 500 miles, congradulations.

SPANKY LS1 Mar 12, 2005 07:50 PM

Why? What was your motivation, the $35.00 that new head bolts cost?

Ain't that the truth. 5000 would be ok, 50k would be impressive.

SSPerformance Mar 12, 2005 08:57 PM

lol let us no in 5k if they lasted

rally2247 Mar 12, 2005 09:04 PM

It's only been 500 miles. I don't see why you wouldn't spend $30 to buy new bolts and be certain everything will be ok 20k miles from now.

SSPerformance Mar 12, 2005 09:29 PM

i bought arp and will never have to buy another set

You don't get it. :chuck-bal "Listen and learn"!!!
ARP fasteners vs. stock fasteners are like comparing a Ford mod motor to an LS1.

Different grade bolts = different tensile strengths. Different tensile strengths will also effect lateral loads(twist factor).

The 70 lbs.ft you refer to for the ARP is NOT "good enough" for the "stocker". Two different animals. The stock bolt is designed to elongate or stretch at a much greater value than the ARP. Once that elongation has occured, even torqueing it to 70#'s doesn't necessarily mean that the torque vs. elongation factor gave you that 70#'s.

If you want to re-use a fastener as important as a head bolt, buy ARP's and be done w/it. There is a reason GM and all reputable engine builders will tell you NOT to re-use a TTY fastener.

Just b/c you pulled a boner :twak: and your junk is still together is not justification to give bad advice.
Lot's of newbies here who might actually think you know what you're talking about.

I guess "those of us" that do things right, are just stuuuupid. Congrats on saving $35.00.

Now..... go back to www.ls1.com :wavey:

Thats a good idea. I should re-use my stock valvesprings and my stock piston rings in the future too. :jest:

go ahead and keep saving that 35 bucks here and there on these odd little things man....cuz sooner or later you're gonna need "all" that money you saved and then a bunch to pay for the fuck-up the one time one of these reused parts is gonna fail. some things are meant to be replaced for a reason.

there's a difference between balls.....and brains.
